Could you tell me what Benfica-Sporting derbies have less than a Galatasaray-fenerbahçe? We have packed stadiums, great crowd, etc... Why Istanbul derby is better? Benfica and Sporting are great rivals too...

They don't. It's typical Turkish talk. They always harp endlessly about their league, national team etc...etc....how can you measure the intensity of a derby? Please. Get a clue.

with a "super-mega-hyper-derbytron 2000 device" developed by the turkish military..

it was originally designed to measure the high levels of hype and mindless babble usually preceding any games involving galatasaray.

Well, I agree, I am sure Benfica vs Sporting derbies are as much big as the Istanbul derby match. When the Sporting vs Benfica comes along, we will praise it ;) When is it anyway? cause I also like sporting lisbon from portugal.

Every soccer country got huge derby matches obviously just like our Istanbul derby matches.

Football derbies

By Sam Tungate

Football brings out many emotions. There is anger at the referee/team/manager for poor performances, and jubilation when the team comes from behind and wins. There is despair as the team lose in the same situation or worse still on penalties, and probably a hundred more that can’t be explained. But there are times when it moves away from the regular games to the derbies.

Those local rivalries are what football is all about, this is a look at some of the biggest games in the world, and these rivalries make Warrington v Widnes look like a weekend stroll in the park. We’ll start looking at one of the biggest rivalries of all:

Barcelona Vs Real Madrid

So yes to start its not as if they are exactly local rivals, but this rivalry runs a lot deeper. What is easily the biggest derby in the Spanish league, the antagonism has been going a lot longer than the beautiful game has been played. Barcelona of course is in Catalonia, which has been at war with the Spanish for centuries, trying to maintain their identity, this isn’t just about football there is a far greater cause.

As if that isn’t enough build up for a quite simply intense match, Real Madrid have, in recent years, have become the biggest club in the World with the likes of Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Raul, they are the football equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters. But there is one player who adds just a little bit more spice.

Step forward Luis Figo.

Figo, the Portuguese mystrieo, played for Barca, was headhunted by the Madrid giants three years ago by Florentino Perez, then an aspiring president of the mighty Real, a position arguably more important than the prime minister. As part of his manifesto he promised to deliver Figo. In short he won Figo now plays for Madrid, much to the dismay of Barca.

Barca have been criticised mainly from locals about the amount of foreign players, particularly Dutch. Local wags have dubbed them Barcajax after the Dutch team Ajax. Figo has been seen as a traitor and a mercenary. Headlines in local papers speak of La Traicion or the Betrayal. Still they have a hero in Rivaldo.

So with some of the biggest stadiums in the world, Nou Camp and the Bernimbau, expect 80000+ fans whistling and chanting for their respective teams.

Rangers Vs Celtic

Perhaps the most written about derby in Britain, the Auld Firm is one of the most intense rivalries. Looking into the history of the rivalry and you find that there is an underlying current of religion that splits these sides. A Scottish fan summed it up nicely for Byte3;

“There’s nothing like an Auld Firm game. Drink yourself stupid, shout about how you hate the Pope and loathe Catholics, behave despicably all day. Nothing like it.”

That’s just the Rangers point of view.

There is a statue of John Greig outside Rangers’ Ibrox stadium commemorating the 1971 disaster when Rangers equalised in the last seconds of the match and 66 people were crushed to death in the chaos. There have been plenty of people killed in brawls over the Auld Firm since then but it marks the biggest lose of life at a single game.

As far back as the early fifties a Rangers goalkeeper was killed after a goalmouth scramble, just one of the many reasons that this is one of the bitterest rivalries in football. Add to this that the games usually decide the league, the insaneness of this derby is more than apparent.

Galatasaray Vs Fenerbahce

Onefootball.com;

“There is nothing to match the intensity of this rivalry anywhere in sport”

That kind of quote sets the mood to perhaps the most fanatical supporting nation of all Turkey. The nation that will actually kill for their team. Galas fans refer to their infamous Ali Sami Yen stadium as “hell.”

Since the 2002 World Cup, their players are starting to become household names with Rushtie and Hagi to name just a few.

The setting of Istanbul, the gateway to Asia, plays host to the intensity of this rivalry. It is not a sub continental rivalry and more like a gunfight at the OK coral. It’s like the Montague’s Vs Capulet, from Romeo and Juliet, Reds Verses Blue.

Don’t expect to get any tickets for it though, the club double sell tickets to raise more money and even sell them on the black market for more money.

Fenerbahce call their fans “Rocket Fuel” and say that it is worth at least a goal a game. It all leads to the players often to brawl with opposition, or even with rival fans it is indeed a crazy derby for a crazy country.

Again these games are usually the title deciders just adding to the intensity.

Expect at least 90 minutes of chanting some of not for the faint of heart

Football brings out passion in many different ways, but these derbies have deeper underlying issues that add to the intensity and make for a special occasion for the neutral.

In the week 33. Sporting-Benfica at Alvalade Stadium. It will be a crucial game for the 2nd place battle, which gives a place in the CL. (1st is unfortunately for Porto :( )

Trying to rank derby matches is completely stupid. I haven't seen it anywhere, but if FIFA actually does it, they shouldn't.

I think all derby matches are amazing in their own respect. To say one is bigger is just leading into a pointless argument that will go nowhere.

And as for Fenerbace beating Galatasary 6-0, that must have been a very disappointing derby for half of the fans.

agreed, every derby match got hyped up tensions, and all of them are awesome to watch. I am sure Olympiakos vs Pana must be an awsome derby as well. I havn't seen one yet, but since the greeks are passionate for their teams just like the turks, it must be a great derby match. ;)

What makes a derby match fun to watch?
1. Fans go nuts, monster flags in the stadiums, flares cover up the stadium with steam, lots of noise when cheering. 25000 fans can roar up 4 times more then the usual. When a goal is been scored, the fans go nuts, nuts I tell ya. You will see the fans will lean downwards from their seats (you loose your seat and can't remember where you seat was).

2. The 2 clubs are either fighting for 1st place or a place in the CL or UEFA cup for next season.

3. The 2 rivals have unfinished business from their previous game.

4. Lots of tackling, attacking, top skilled players showing their skills in the derby game. Basically the players are fired up front of fully packed fans.

Epic post Shinji!

As for what makes a good derby, T1975 hi-lighted several important points, but you forget the dirty play that is only caught on replay!!!

Yep, last year the second Panathinaikos- Olympiakos derby was won by Olympiakos 3-0, and it secured us the championship on head to head result!

The only thing I don't like about derby matches is when they get out of hand and people start destroying things and causing riots.

Yes bro, most of the derby matches has the riots unfortunately. It is interesting to see stuff like that for me for some reason :D . Don't get me wrong I am not in to that, its just interesting.
