Thorpe in 400m disqualification shock
World record holder and Olympic champion Ian Thorpe's chances of representing Australia in the 400 metres freestyle in Athens this year are in doubt after he was controversially disqualified from this morning's qualifying heats.

Thorpe was lining up to swim his heat at the Olympic selection trials and national championships in Sydney this morning when he overbalanced on the block.

The world record holder was then disqualified for a deliberate false start.

An appeal has been lodged against the disqualification.

But if the disqualification stands Thorpe will be unable to qualify for the 400m final which is scheduled to be swum this evening.

Poor chap, certainly feel for him if he does get disqualified, as I was disqualified in 200m at my state level competitions, for the same thing

i no its the rules and everything, but no1 in the race and no1 in aus is gonna be in uproars if he was let in

He is the best swimmer in the world.
He holds 9 of the 10 fastest times ever, the other person is Grant Hackett. He hasn't lost since 1998 and his smashed the World Record atleast 6 times.

Its a bit silly the hole disqualifcationg thingo i dont think any one can imagine how hes feeling at the moment. Although he seemed to take is so well didnt get angry or anything

That's what makes Thorpe a true champion, he took it in his stride. He will win every other event he competes in at Athens and I think this hurdle in his career will make him swim longer. There was talk of him retiring in 2006 but I think he will be at Beijing at the tender age of 26 in 2008.

I'm very dissapointed that we wont see him in his pet event but we will still see him in the 200, 100 and both relays plus possibly the medley relay. That is still 5 potential medals.

By this happening at least he can train totally for the sprints and doesnt have to mix the endurance of the 400 with the speed for the shorter races.

I feel sorry for Stevens. Noone should have the pressure put on them like the media is putting on him to drop his place for Thorpe.

Thorpe is a legend already, he's brilliant. No-one comes close to him anymore.

Daniel Kowalski is still my favourite swimmer though.
