To clear things up about Rio...

i originally posted this in the Manchester United Thread, but i felt that it would be worthwhile posting in a new thread after reading a few other comments about him in other threads (ie Barcelona Thread).

for god sake! This whole Rio contract thing is getting out of hand!

What Rio has done is perfectly normal:

1. EVERYONE puts in a high unrealistic request in to start with and then it is negotiated down - that's a well known fact.

2. Rio has actually announced himself that he is totally commited to the club himself and can't wait to sign a new contract.

3. Contract negotiations always take a long time for a player of Rio's calibre, mainly because of agents.

4. It is mainly Rio's agent that is doing most of the negotiating.

Quotes from Rio himself from bbc.co.uk/sport

"Some people take two years; some people take 18 months; some people take a year"

"What I am saying is that people take 18 months to sign a contract. I have been given a month and my head is on the chopping board"

and Rio never looks like he's playing with conviction or commitment because he always looks so relaxed that's just his style. It doesn't mean he's NOT commited, it just doesn't look like he is.

FOR GOD SAKE HE IS NOT BEING SELFISH OR BETRAYING THE CLUB!! :nape:

Rio = World Class Defender = Commited Man Utd Player = Next Captain

sorted.

i'd also like to add that yes, he does earn alot of money, and so do almost all other footballers of Rio's class, it's nothing new.

hope it clears things up.

:)

True, Keane stalled long over his current deal as well. If you can qualify it as stalling. But I dunno Ferdinand has lost some of my respect because of his recent off-pitch actions.

He's in his early/mid-twenties, he's going to want to go out and party etc. so let him. As long as it doesn't affect his on pitch performance it doesn't bother me at all.

Sorry but I don't quite agree with that. He chose football as a profession. Responsibilities come with that. Not being able to go out is one of 'em. He's being well compensated for that.

And it's not so much the going out, but the speeding, drunk driving, getting into fights. Beckham had a lot of off-field "activities" but I never had the idea that it affected his football...

ok, his proffesion is football, but that shouldn't really stop him from having a life should it?

my personal opinion is that if what he does has no effect on his performances for the club and his commitments to club (which Beckham didn't fullfil at times - such as missing training to babysit), then it's not really a problem.

Does Rio deserve a high-paying contract? I don't think he deserve a high-paying contract. Unless he is a highly-respected player like Keane or van Nistelrooy, he doesn't deserve a high-paying contract. He was an influnce when we lost the league(2004/05) for us and he can't score goals.

Dont quite agree with that. Whether or not he makes his presence known on a stat sheet, he must be considered the quintisential defensive figure in the starting 11. Definately one of those players youd miss badly if he left, whether or not you know it now

In any event, this is a very good mini thread: I think many mancs are getting edgy with the events swirling around the club recently, and thus they probably had little to no patience for a contract stalling. I think he will definately sign sooner or later. I think its easy to pick on him, too, because he doesnt seem too bright, or at least too self-responsible. But the message of the thread is just right: he isnt doing anything unusual, and shouldnt get the stick and the cries of "sell him" for it

get rid of him, hes a ******* nonse anyway. if i were fergie id take him into a room and batter his ungrateful arse, to me it seems that he was given plenty of oppurtunity, then he ****s up his drugs test, the club stand by him and now hes "stalling"on signing. ship him out the cock

Rio Ferdinand is like most other players at the top level of football. Out for all they can get, greedy and un-loyal. Just how much money does the greedy bastard want?

It's going to get worse. Wage demands continue to go up and so will your season ticket to a point when the common fans cannot afford it anymore.

Sure he can have a life besides football. But as a footballer it is limited. Obviously he can go out and stuff, but the amount of trouble he's got himself into this and previous season is a bit too much for my liking.

Beckham once missed a training because his kid was ill. Big deal, it's a training. Rio missed what? Seven months because he was stupid enough to miss a doping test...

I'm sure more fans are gonna turn against Ferdinand. We payed Leeds a fucking huge amount for Rio when he wanted to join Manchester United. We paid Rio's salary when he was banned thanks to one silly act of missing a doping test. Then, Rio repays us by asking for a more lucrative contract. How does this make us United fans want to protect him. Sure he is a top class defender but, if you do not have the true commitment for the club, you may as well get lost.

The reason we protect is the same reason chelski fans protect there club when people talk about them and all that tapping up stuff. With rio its the same thing i would protect until death or until he leaves the club (which he wont).

My thoughts exactly.......Harry Kewell screwed Leeds big time when he left. Anyway just because everyone's doing it doesnt make it any more right. :kader: But, i believe i would be doing the same thing if i was in Rio's place.......squeez as much money as possible :brow: (H)
