Sorry, i have tried un-installation and the only way to do it is from the device manager. Also if you try to reinstall the driver, the name is still the one you've changed. But i think the name should not affect the behaviour of the driver.

if you go through the registry, you will notice that you can change the gamepad name (OEMname) except the (LocationInformation) in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\USB\Vid_0e8f&Pid_0003\5&f759c6f&0&2

which shows the "true" name of your gamepad

Problems

I followed your instructions re: regedit to hopefully achieve the aim of activating my Nostromo n45 Dual Analog Gamepad. I searched the registry for the entries as per your instructions and replaced 2 of the four entries. The registry wouldn't allow me to alter the other two, or at least it refused to change/store the edits. I tried it in-game anyway, with the following results:

1. I can now go to Controls section and I finally (despite patching previously) get an arrow to switch out of keyboard remapping to what I hoped would be the gamepad. Oddly though, it calls the next controller option "Multimedia Keyboard Hub" !? Still, I remapped as I desired and despite a couple of glitches where it lost the changes, I finally got my choice of controls in there and went to the game.

2. Ingame, well it works with all the regular controls, the buttons do what I want them to do but as with others here, the right analogue stick's axis' are messed up. Didn't figure that out till I got a freekick outside the box and started trying to adjust for dip and spin. Odd! Imagine someone will find a fix for this.

3. Also find that the controls are a little bit sluggish, but I'm not sure if this is the gameplay itself or the fiddling done with the controller. Despite not being able to select the gamepad under the controls menu previously, I could use it in-game albeit with odd mapping for moves/actions, and it was a bit smoother, more responsive. Anyone else have this issue?

4. Finally, thanks to your help, I'm a bit closer to having the game and gamepad work as I'd wish. I had trouble getting it to work in Fifa 03 too but eventually people came up with fixes and I expect that to happen here too. The only problem with doing it this way, with editing the reg, is I fear for what it'll do to my controller's setup for NHL 04 and other games I occasionally use it for.

In closing, it's frustrating as HELL that EA (or whoever they licenced this out to this year) turn out such inconsistent and shoddy work. From brief time in-game, I get the feel that the gameplay might be the best yet and the football fusion idea is a strong one. However, graphically it's a step back apart from the smoother animations, along with the smoother cinematics are superior. Increasingly the player skins look like zombies. The crowd anims are significantly poorer than last time. The menu's are horrible, the general responsiveness of the GUI is nearly laughable. Then there's the horribly inconsistent patch issues; quite why they don't release a regular .exe I don't know. Then there's this, the ridiculously lazy problems with controllers and gamepads. It was clearly an incomplete game, out-of-the-box and I don't think any of us would reasonably have minded waiting an extra month or so to have these issues ironed out.

With EA's very nonchalant attitude toward patching their games, I fear it's going to be down to the outstanding mod community to fix this one up. I don't know, they turn out a brilliantly presented, near perfect NHL 2004, strong games in NBA and NFL arenas (from what I hear) yet we always get stuck with the wart-ridden runt of the litter. It IS the most popular sport of the four, afterall. Bah, disappointing. Back to the controller fix hunt.

ps. you shouldn't need to remove your gamepad drivers and reinstall to get the right analogue stick working. It's due to the issues caused by the combo of regediting, the game itself and possibly your gamepad's config software. IF it worked ok prior to FIFA 04, it's not your gamepad that's the issue, nor its drivers.

Chris et al,

any ideas on fixing the mixed-up right-analogue stick axis issue? If I can fix that, then I'm all set with controls as I want them. I'm 99.9% sure it's not something that requires a driver reinstall, providing your right stick worked ok prior to FIFA 04. There were many similar issues with FIFA 03 which required some editing to get dual analogue pads working properly. EA just don't bother providing support for a majority of pads.

Hey Chris I've managed to set all of the buttons of my gamepad, and the tweak came up successfully ingame thanks to you!
Just one question though... the right analog stick (I have a ThrustMaster FireStorm Dual Power) doesn't work properly, yeah I've done the tweaking to fix it, and it works but not as it should, is there anything to do in the registry? I bet there is. Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Anyone who's tried this and find it works a-ok except for the right stick axis, try the following.

In your gamepad profiler, create a profile for FIFA 2004 and leave everything blank except for remapping the X and Y axis of your right analogue stick to Rx and Ry. That's if your profiler/pad support such a remap. Then try the game and see how the right stick performs. To save time you can go to practice and freekicks to see how the axis definition behave.

Let me know if you find any success with that? I might (might) have found a fix.

I've done the above and now have a posh joypad I've never heard of apparently connected (!) but somehow I still haven't got a `Controller setup' type option in-game, even though I've patched it. I know its patched because I had a No-CD patch on the v1.0 and now I'm back to putting my CD in again, so it must be 1.1 or whatever.
When I run the EA-Info thing from the FIFA start-menu list, none of my controllers are listed there, not even my MS Sidewinder, which works as it should. The PS2 pads work as well but I'mstill not getting an option where I can re-map in game.
Any clues? Getting p*ssed off now and thinking of taking back and waiting for Pro-Evo, which DOES let you re-map.

FANTASTIC What an excellent fix. I have been really PxxxxD Off the last few days cos I have played FIFA with the same controls for years and I had to think about the buttons I was pressing. Now it it back to normal and I can enjoy FIFA again. Thanks again

Hey you guys.... I've got the same right stick problem. I changed the name of my MP-8866 DUal USB controlled to a Logitech DUAL USB and everything works fine except when I take free kicks I can't move the right analog stick up or down. And the driver software for my pad doesn't not support profiling. So how can I fix the right analog stick? It works fine in other games....

I'm using a XboxController with an PSX Driver. Works fine.
I just configured it to run with the Logitech Dual Action USB. Everything works fine, the right analog Stick also does.
But the black and white buttons are exchanged with the Back &Start buttuns.
When I'm pressing the white button during game i'm getting into the menuselection.
Black: nothing happens.
I was able to configure the back & Start Button in Fifa's Controllconfig. Now Back is OTB and Start making a player run.
I'm not able to configure the white and black button for OTB or anything else.

Is there e possibility to change the Settings? oes any other Gampads fit better to the XboxController?
I hope i'll find help here

I think the right analog stick problem is inherent to the driver and maybe due to some conflicts in the registry setting. Be careful not to change any other thing when changing gamepad name in the registry. The only remedy is to try 9-ball's advice (use the game profiler) provided.

Or if possible use system restore but backup your document files first.

Here's a link to a DX deadzone setting software (called DXDeadzone.exe) that you *may* find useful. I've tried it and i found it very complicated.

Do you know the "button layout code" of your gamepad? I mean the number assigned to each button. For example, Logitech Dual Action has:
1 = triangle (i.e. the top of the four, or the north one)
2 = circle (i.e. the right one)
3 = cross (i.e. the buttom one)
4 = square (i.e. the left one)
5, 6, 7, 8 = L1, R1, L1, L2
9 = select
10 = start

The original default config is 10 1 2 3 5 4 6 7 8 10 9 corresponding to:

menu, lob, pass, shot, trigger run, through pass, sprint, OTB, walk in the game. (the last two numbers 10 and 9 can be ignored)

So you need to know the button layout code and then follow the above order to reassign them. For my controller which has the same layout code as Logitech Dual Action, i can leave 5 6 7 8 unchanged and only change 1 2 3 4. But avoid repeating the numbers used except 10 (or your "menu" button code).

I wish the drivers for the PS2 converter (A MP-8866 Dual US came with a profiler but it doesn't. I've been playing around with renaming my pad to different game pads, and its the same problem. There seems to be only one axis on the right analog stick, yet when I calibrate the pad in the driver, it has both axes. The DX utility u put up doesn't work with my OS.

I'm sure someone on this board has the same USB PS2 converter I have... maybe they have it working properly and could help me out. Thanks.

hi could someone please help me, i've looked in CProgram Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2004\data\system\config.dat and it says my gravis xterminator digital is the there beause it's got yes before it, what i don't get is in the controller config option in the game it doesn't show up at all only keyboard, also when u select sides it only allows me to use my keyboard, does anyone know how to fix this so i can use my pad.

sounds like you don't have the (canned laughter) "patch" (/canned laughter) installed. Try it again, using the instructions on the main forum page.

have you tried Chris' suggestion from the top of this thread? Rename your pad in the registry and remap in the config.dat (see intructions in previous posts) and you might find it works. Irksome workaround, I know, but you might at least find some success.

To Suki,

why on earth would you want to use the d-pad instead of the stick? You get far more detailed control with the stick. Regardless, have you tried your profiler software? Might be your only hope until someone else here comes up with general fixes for all these issues. The game's only been out a week, afterall. Took a couple of months to fix some gamepad issues with 03.

thanks for the suggestion 9 but i think i'm slowly gettin there, the problem now is that my gravis controller is there when i first start fifa but when i get into a game it disappears, so if you have any other sugestions they are more than welcome
