I live in Chicago. And every sport is important in this town, and every team in town sucks!. I think the most popular sports in the states are American Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and then Soccer. I say football is tops because more people watch it and attend the games, and the Superbowl (Football Championship) is the largest televised event in the states.
As for MLS, the quality is poor but the people who live here have to support it, if they ever want it to succeed. It is a very young league, and it may take generations for it to improve.

Jari: Finland never played USA in Nagano 98. Your main accomplishments are beating Sweden and Canada. USA lost to Czechs in the first round of the knock-out stage.
btw, I saw most of the games, except Russia's 9:2 thrashing of Kazakhstan, 4:1 win of Belarus and 7:5 win over Finland. My favorite games were Czechs-Russia 1:0 and Finland-Russia 3:4. Russia was losing 2:0 and 3:1 but still was able to fight back and win the game. The reason why USA and Canada did poorly is because they gathered the team right before the Olympics and both expected to come and win it. As I watchh the news, they started to take Olympics seriously -- they already are making the '02 team. In fact, every country began to do so, except Russia. I have no idea what the hell are we waiting for..

Allright, the reasons why MLS is not interesting league.

1. Reglament. 2 conferences and play-offs? There is something wrong with that.
2. Just 12 teams. For a country like that, that is way too small.
3. The best reason -- no relegation/promotion. Those teams that try to do very good in "A" league only loose their players to MLS team and never get any chance of making the highest division. That sucks.
4. MLS do not have much money to pay their stars, so real soccer stars leave MLS for Europe. But MLS has money to pay players like Stoichkov, Mattheus, Azizi, Ravelli and others.
5. Soccer is just not popular here. I mean everybody plays it, everybody likes it (almost everybody), but if you look into Sports Illustrated, or ESPN the magazine, you will hardly find anything about the MLS. Once I found an article in ESPN the magazine about Michael Owen. You have no idea how I was surprised. They have about 1-2 pages about soccer in 50-page magazines. In order to make this sport popular, you have to have about 10 pages of soccer there. But this is capitalist world, meaning if the clients don't like something, and don't buy a certain product, distributors of that certain product will have to suffer through a loss of money, and thus make the product as the public wants it in order to buy it. But soccer is just interesting here to play. Nobody likes to watch nor read about it.

scrudley ....are u on crack? saying that hockey is more popular than baseball? uve gotta be kidding me.......im a die hard rangers fan......and hockey is not more popular than baseball.....u look in the papers and hockey gets 2 pages of coverage and most of that is the rangers, devils and islanders. baseball always has like 10 pages......and college football and college basketball get more coverage than hockey......it does suck but that is the case...but seriously i wonder how u can say that....because is america...hockey is alwas struggling for media coverage and for games to be shown nationally....sure espn shows it ....but thats not exactly channel 4 or 7.....fox 5 only shows the playoffs....and seriosuly ..who the **** cares if america lost to finland and doesnt win in hockey and soccer nationally....we're too busy dominating every other sport ...........

Well, we dominate every sport because we made them up. Basketball, Rugby, and Football all have roots to soccer. But we made them (Not Rugby, but like baseball, US Football, basketball) up, henceforth we should be good at them. It reminds me of the "Rules of War" ole England mad back in the ole days of English domination. Heh heh heh.

As for the relegation, yes, the reason why they can't do it yet. Is a lot of the A-League stadiums are not equipped for more then 4,000 people (It would make the games sold out though, hehe). I mean, one of the conference champions Minnesota Thunder (from where I am) have capacity I think for 5,000. The top age groups play there for the US Cup, and the other teams play on the 42 fields outside of it. But the relegation/promotion is a good idea.

- I do watch and read about soccer all the time!
