Ok, I reckon this question needs to be divided into two groups - the great directors who are still alive, and the directors who are still making great movies. Francis Ford Coppolla is an all time great and still alive, but Youth Without Youth was trash and he hasnt made anything else for ten years, since the Rainmaker, which was also trash.

So....

Directors who are alive and still making great movies.....

.... let's say to get in this group they need to have made atleast one great movie in the last three years....

1. Werner Herzog
2. David Lynch
3. Jim Jarmusch
4. Pedro Almodovar
5. Terrence Malick
6. The Coen Brothers
7. Abbas Kiarostami
8. Sidney Lumet
9. Clint Eastwood
10. Michael Moore
11. Quentin Tarantino
12. Stephen Frears
13. Guiellmo Del Toro
14. Wes Anderson
15. Steven Soderbergh
16. David Cronenberg
17. Oliver Hirschbiegel
18. Sam Mendes
19. Mike Leigh
20. Michael Winterbottom
21. Michael Haneke
22. Brian De Palma
23. Shane Meadows
24. Spike Lee
25. Istvan Szabo

Great directors who are still alive but dont make movies anymore or no longer seem to make great movies....

(in my opinion)

1. Jean-Luc Godard
2. Nicholas Roeg
3. Francis Ford Coppolla
4. Wim Wenders
5. Bigas Luna
6. Milos Foreman
7. Martin Scorsese
8. Ken Russell
9. Roman Polanski
10. Steven Spielburg
11. Ridley Scott
12. Errol Morris
13. Oliver Stone
14. Takashi Miike
15. Woody Allen
16. Terry Gilliam
17. Bernardo Bertolucci
18. Luc Besson
19. Richard Attenborough
20. Wolfgang Petersen

Will come back and edit as and when I remember people I missed out

Well it looks like Guillermo del Toro is going to be directing the LOTR prequels, "The Hobbit" and a completely made up film that connects it to LOTR. Should be great, del Toro has the talent and now he has the chance to helm a major major film franchise. I can't wait to see what kinds of things he plans to trick that **** out with, should be great!

its not a "completely made up film that connects it to LOTR", they will get the story from stories of all the other Middle Earth books Tolkien wrote like the Silmarillion
