Tottenham Hotspur "Spurs" Thread [2012/2013]

Make America Great Again
I really just forgot about him when I was thinking of how AVB is going to rob Porto for players. When you think about it, he kind of doesn't really have to. His fullbacks at Spurs are good, the midfield is also pretty good with say, Parker, VdV, and Modric (or I'm guessing Moutinho if Modric does get sold). Adebayor is more than capable of doing the Falcao thing in this league and if City are dicks about trying to get a good price (or if Ade wants too much money, AVB could make a play for the real thing). Bale and Gio would be devastating wide forwards. They could use a keeper, but in reality Friedel will be fine this season; but if not there are a billion great young keepers in Germany that would be affordable. CB is a problem but even that, Kaboul isn't bad, nor is Dawson when healthy.

I mean, THAT is a team. If Vilas Boas really is a good manager and just couldn't get the players at Chelsea to listen to him because of his age and because of how split that locker room is, then Spurs could even make a run at the title.

Oh wow. Yeah, what are the odds for Spurs. If they're 40/1 or something, I might put $20 on them to win the title.

EDIT: Looks like you can get 33/1 at some places. I just might. United and City aren't making signings. Spurs won't have Champions League.

Ideally he plays consistently this season, has a great season, promptly tells Tottenham to **** off as he goes to another team on a free. Then he is fully fit and ready for the Confed. (H)

AVB surprised me slightly when he rolled out Spurs in the 4-2-3-1 that he took so long to establish at Chelsea. The thing is, Modric is perfect for a 4-2-3-1, and so is van der Vaart, but with one gone and one close to leaving, I think he'll return to his old 4-3-3:

Adebayor
Bale--------Lennon
Sigurdsson-Dembele
Sandro/Parker
Ekotto-Vertonghen-Kaboul-Walker
Friedel

I can see Spurs selling Vaart if they can get close to their 15m evaluation from HSV, and using that and the 15m left from Modric to get Willian and Lloris. AVB could even attempt a return to his attacking DM concept with both Sandro and Parker willing to go forward. But even though the players are a very good fit, I think it'd be a mistake. AVB himself remarked upon why this concept failed at Chelsea, and it wasn't because Romeu wasn't a good attacker (although Spurs' DMs are much better going forward). It was because of the league itself. When Romeu would try to surprise defense by moving vertically, in those very few early matches, he'd leave the back very suspect because Prem clubs are direct and transition to attack quickly, and Romeu found himself back-tracking too often and left us too exposed, especially by leaving a lot of space open in front of what is a high-defensive line.

I think AVB is smart enough not to try it again, but I alsot hink he's stubborn enough to think that it will work because the problem last year was Chelsea's and not his own, which is false. He needs to show more flexibility this year, and he has players who can play both 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 well so he can alter his formation throughout the season.

I dunno that much about Sigurdsson, but Dembele is a good passer. Short passes, but good passes. And Parker as a holder but not being a typical holder is kind of the point. Spurs don't have a typical holder, and the question is whether AVB sees that as a negative or a positive, depending on his insistence to play his Porto tactics.

I just feel like Gio and Moutinho would have been much better squad introductions. What I will say is that this team is going to be very quick going forward and very direct. Also with the exception of Lennon and Parker, all their players are big strong dudes. They're going to hammer Manchester United.

If Gio is fit and isn't sold, he should start on the right. He can play the Hulk role. Lennon playing over him is pretty bad. He's hot garbage.

If AVB too prefers Lennon there must be something there. One manager not appreciating his talent is one thing, but two? Lennon is fine, btw.

I guess so, was hoping AVB would give him a shot, but it isn't looking like it at all. Oh well, six more months and he can leave on a Bosman.
