UCL-Arsenal Vs Chelsea

Chelsea's in-form hitman Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has stoked up the tension ahead of tonight's Champions League shoot-out at Arsenal by accusing the Gunners of being lucky through their 17-game unbeaten streak against the Blues.

Feelings are running high in both camps ahead of the quarter-final, second-leg showdown, which kicks off with the score at 1-1 from the first leg at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago.

Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri was in a bullish mood last night, given his side's surge to just four points behind Arsenal in the title race.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been enraged by Sir Alex Ferguson's backing for Chelsea to beat Arsenal, a statement the Manchester United manager made after his 1-0 FA Cup semi-final victory against the Gunners on Saturday.

And Wenger will feel similarly irritated by Hasselbaink's verdict that Arsenal's marathon run without losing to the Blues - stretching back six years - has been fortunate.

The Dutch striker, who has four goals in two games to his name, insists he and his team-mates are now fired up for a hefty dose of revenge.

"Arsenal have had luck on their side more often than not against us," Hasselbaink said.

"But sometimes you have to go and get luck yourself. All our players know what this game is about. Everyone wants to do well and we are ready.

"You can feel it and see it in each other's eyes that no-one is afraid. We believe we can beat them and we have enough firepower to score in any game."

Ranieri believes victory for his side would be the catalyst which causes Arsenal's campaign to crumble.

The Italian is bidding to capitalise on the fall-out from Arsenal's double-header with United.

Arsenal's nerve will be tested, when, boosted by the surprise return from injury of Jose Reyes, Fredrik Ljungberg and Ashley Cole, they take on the Blues in the all-London European tie.

Ranieri was in a bubbly mood as he addressed reporters last night - ironically in Arsenal's own press room ahead of their Highbury training session - and predicted trouble ahead for the Gunners if his side win tonight.

Ranieri said: "If Arsenal win, that will be normal and nothing will change.

"But my players have worked very hard to get here and if we win, everything could then happen to Arsenal.

"I don't think Arsenal are in crisis, however, as they are a good team.

"I am the Chelsea coach but my job is not important now as my players are full of confidence.

"They have recharged their batteries after the Tottenham match and they are full of energy.

"I normally need to motivate my players but I didn't have to. Everyone was relaxed."

Ranieri refused to read too much into Arsenal's FA Cup defeat against United but implied the Gunners, who rested Thierry Henry, were not fully focused on the match.

"Arsenal did not want to fight 100%. They had a rest and that means a lot in my opinion. If Arsene Wenger wanted to get to the final, he would have played all his best team. Henry would have started.

"If they had lost with Henry, Ashley Cole and everybody else playing, maybe there would have been pressure on Arsenal. But those players didn't play."

Ranieri, whose team have scored in and won all five Champions League away games this season, will now focus on finding a weakness in the Arsenal team, who have lost in all three cup competitions but remains undefeated in 30 Barclaycard Premiership games.

Ranieri added: "It is very hard to find something that is not right about the Arsenal team. We will try though.

"They are the favourites as they got a goal at Stamford Bridge in the first leg and the league table says that they are better than us.

"We are the underdogs but have won every away game in Europe so far."

Chelsea captain Marcel Desailly has a one-match ban as punishment for his red card in the first leg while midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron will also miss out as he is not quite ready to return from his back injury.

Meh, Jimmy can say what he likes, I don't think it'll have much of an effect on our side.
Besides, as you said, it requires more than luck to got 17 games.

Im hoping Arsenal are going to win this game. But I don't really care, because the winner is going to get knocked out against Mighty Madrid...:) ;)

I did not know about the VICKS thing going back 3 years like someone said. If Arsenal scores early and then scores another one, I think that they could pile on 5 but if Chelsea replies then we may have to go to extra time.

'Silver goal' rule could decide the tie

Arsenal's Champions League tie with Chelsea could be decided under the 'SILVER GOAL' rule if the second leg ends in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.

Under the 'silver goal' rule, 15 minutes of extra time will be played. If one team leads at the end of that period, they will be declared the winners.

If the two teams are still level after 15 minutes of extra time, a second quarter-hour period will be played. Away goals will not count double during this time.

If the result remains deadlocked at the end of this period, a penalty shoot-out will determine which team advances to the Semi-Final against Real Madrid or Monaco.

Read on for the other possible outcomes of tonight's London derby:

IF ARSENAL WIN...
Arsenal will advance to the next round.

IF CHELSEA WIN...
Chelsea will advance to the next round.

IF THE TEAMS DRAW 0-0...
Arsenal will win on the away goals rule following a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

IF THE MATCH ENDS IN A HIGH-SCORING DRAW I.E. 2-2 OR ABOVE...
Chelsea will win on the away goals rule.

I Hope it doesn't come down to the silver goal or penalties thats the worst way to loose a match

It would be nice if it did go into extra time, an extra 15 minutes, or even 30 minutes for the Arsenal players.
