imagine Liverpool does get in the CL and draws all games in the group stage and crashes out.

Next argument please.

If nobody beats the champs (assuming Liverpool is not permitted to participate next year) then how can the "new" champion call themselves champions of Europe?
The CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE should be able to finish 4th inside their own league.

Well madrid were allowed to defend their title 3 years ago, at the expense of Zaragoza. Maybe Liverpool should be allowed to "qualify" for Europe through that tedious system of summer fixtures.

still they fought to be at the qualifying round and they deserve to be there, which can't be said of Liverpool who finished 5th in the League.

I agree that the title holder should qualify automatically, but changing the rules Now at the cost of a smaller club, just because Liverpool didn't play at the same level domestically, would be just shocking.

That thingie with the Welsh champions is just retarded too. Not sure if there are any regulations about this, but that would be just a fancy way of buying your way into the champions league. It would definitely open a really terrible precedent, even if it would be good for both clubs.

don't get me wrong.. everton totally deserve their spot.. on the other hand, they ain't great in the second half to the EPL campaign but we were even worst then them, maybe carragher is right in a way when he said if we lost to Juventus in the quater final we surely will secure the 4th spot in the league, since benitez play a lot of second string players in some of the league matches especially after the quater final stages e.g. the match between crystal palace which cost us the match and if we won that we would have secure the 4th spot by goals difference.. but that is beside the point now.. hehehe... and about the welsh champions idea, the FAW (wales FA) has insisted that TNT has to play in the CL qualifying round or else lose their qualifying bert to another wales team... so i guess that idea is out of the question already...:ewan:

this is a bad situation to be in. If i were Everton there would be no way Id let Liverpool in, Its like Celtic allowing rangers to take their place in a CL, just aint gonna happen. I agree that the Champions shoudl be in the competition but then agaion they should have also finished at least 4th to make sure. Why dont liverpool buy a place????? Havent there been cases in Italian football (fiorentina I believe) were they have brought a league placing from a team in Serie B??? I think it may have happened in Romania also. Why not go to one of the teams who are ultra minnows with no chance of realistically qualifying, offer them 5m plus another 2m if they progress to Knockout stages or something. Im sure, no offence that Slima Wanderes or Valletta(No offence any maltese fans" would rather have 5-7m in the bank than be knocked out in round 1.
UEFA has shot itself in the foot on this one without a doubt

Right, I got a solution that would stop for good all this nonsense about Liverpool getting a CL birth to defend their title. I'm sure it'll annoy a couple people, but here it goes anyway.

Back in the day, only those who won their domestic league plus would qualify to the CL. Also, the current champion got an automatic invitation to defend their title.
Last decade, UEFA, in the good name of entertainment and a lot of money, granted access to their greatest club competition to other clubs from its most distinct leagues.
Results of this action:

1)
More games demand more depth in the squads, which, to still be competitive on an european level, means more money invested by the clubs (those who have it, at least).

2)
On the other hand, an extra 3 or 4 teams from Italy, Spain, Germany and England makes it even more difficult to small budget teams to reach the CL final.
Here's a group of finalists from the period of 1976 to 1991: Red Star Belgrade, Steaua Bucharest, Brugge, Malmo, St Etienne, Benfica.

3) With more money involved in the competition rich clubs got richer.

4)
More teams from the top leagues mean they clash more oftenly. While this may be good at first glance, it also means the epic aura behind a Juve x Barça clash (for instance), because it was so rare, is lost.
Back then - and those old enough will agree - a Bayern x Real was like a gift from the football gods. It was Darth Vader vs Obi-Wan, 'Finally, we meet again', but without the akward breathing.

5) Finally, the most perverse feature of this new european football order is exactly what motivates Liverpool's argument.
Truth is, a Great club always fights for their domestic league. Real, Barça, Juve, Milan, ManU, Arsenal, Bayern (with the exception of transition years, where every team struggles) are chronic La Liga, Serie A, EPL and Bundesliga contenders, respectively. No matter how their european campaign is going, they won't give up on the league to focus exclusively on the CL. (Seriouisly, when was the last time Liverpool contended the EPL?)

What Liverpool did was tremendously unfair to Chelsea, Juve, PSV and Milan. When the later teams were burning their players both on the domestic league and the CL, the now european champs were candidly resting their troops on weekends, to charge at full power on the mid-week fixture.

Bottom line
In my view, the European Champion should be known for one thing: being the best team in Europe. And the best team in Europe can't afford to just play on wednesdays.

Cheers liverpool (H). Anyway i also wanna give a (Y) to ancelotti. He said they'd break the liverpool defence in 3 minutes & they did. Excellent match.
