Uninstalling graphics chip?

My PC currently has a 64mb Geforce 4MX shared graphics chip. It's **** so i'm on the verge of ordering a decent card.

Do i need to uninstall my graphics chip first or do i install the card first? My system info software says my AGP slot is being used by the grapics chip but when i take the side off the AGP slot is free, whats going on?

you need to go into the bios - usually "del" at startup - have a look around there and you'll find it somewhere to disable it ;)

TOON ARMY, you don't need to disable or uninstall anything.

Just plug in your new graphics card, plug in your monitor to the new graphis card, install the drivers and thats it... you're set.

When you start a game, it will ask you which Graphics card you want to use (the 440 MX or the new one...) .. choose the new one obviously and you're good to go.

but by the way he said, it sounds as he has onboard gfx atm so he'd have to disable that

Yeah it's an onboard shared graphics chip so it's using my pc's memory which would be a waste if i just left it installed.

It doesn't matter if he has onboad grafix. He doesn't have to disable anything.

I have an a motherboard with onboard grafix as well and have a Radeon 9700 Pro installed.... nothing is disabled.

Trust me... i've done it quite a few times on my friends computers.... just plug in the new card and youre good to go.

The only thing is the onboard graphics used 64mb of my memory so disabling it would bring my total to 512 instead of 448

no thats not the way that it works (at least i dont think it does) so don't worry about that.

I think on some m/boards you have to disable the onboard gfx, i had that with my onboard sound but may be different for gfx

judging by that statement, i'd suggest you get a computer technician to fix it coz its pretty obvious you don't know anything about video cards.

Video cards have their memory seperate from the computers RAM.

a 64 GM Geforce 440 MX has its own 64 megs and has NOTHING to do with the computers RAM.

IF you buy a 128 MB Radeon Card it will have its own 128 MB memory ,.... it doesn't mean that it will use 128 MEgs from your computers 512 mb

Seriously don't attempt it yourself....

No wonder Dell Makes so much money.....

I know what your talking about. When the chip is set to share 64MB in the Systems properties it will say that you have 64mB less RAM than your computer has in it.

Not sure what Operating System you have. This is for XP.
Because these ass clowns aren't going to try and help you try this if you want. Dont disable ur onboard chip yet. Install the new card. Restart the computer with the monitor plugged into the new card instead of the motherboard.
Go into Device Manager by right clicking on the My Compurer Icon and selecting properties > Hardware> Device Manager. In there select the onboard chip and Disable it.

I have an onboard chip and when I installed my new card the two drivers conflicted and ****ed up my picture severely. This may not happen to you, but it can happen.

WHat i have said to do is for XP. Should also be the same for 2000 but i aint sure about 98.

Hope that helps.
