Here's the background to this thread writing reason:
Urs Mayer is a swiss soccer referee, he was invited to be referee at the EURO 2004 competition. He refereed 1 or 2 matches and he was pretty good.
When He juged the quarter final between England and Portugal he judged very good but in a situation of 1-1(I think) in the last minutes Sol Campbell scored an header, all of England players started to celebrate till they heard the whistle that canceled the goal(Because John Terry throwed down Ricardo).
From that whistle and on the English media(especially "The Sun") started to criticize Urs Mayer:
1. They told about the story that he left his wife for a woman soccer referee.
2. "The Sun" streched England's biggest flag(of the fans who were in Portugal infront of Mayers Elecricity store in Switzerland.
3. They made an incite against Urs Mayer

"It's their problem", he said
It will probably be hard for him to put his leg on England's ground in the next time period.

Do you think that the "charcter killing" of Urs Mayer is true?

thats the english media for you. there the biggest bunch of cúnts in the world and they are the reason that ireland, wales & scotland hope england fail at EVERYTHING they do. we dont really hate the england players, its just the media that piss everyone off :f***:

i hope they all die.... tommorow.

Criticizing Maier is part of the man's job, but the tabloids in England went way, way too far by publicizing his address and e-mail.
There are enough idiots who will visit the man and what happens next... I do not dare to think about it.
Is there no law in England to restrict those tabloids (without really censoring them)? They on purpose put Maier in danger!

It's just so stupid...... English press showed Europe how stupid they can be:kader:

It was hard decision to make, maybe he was wrong.. but come on.... How can they give address, we all know that sometimes English fans can be very dangerous...................

They did put him in danger, and they should pay for this..

he's doing his job

and if im not mistaken, the UEFA backed him up fully with his decision

so in this case, the English are left looking foolish

Some of the English people are simply being sour grapes. I simply have no idea why Meier was blamed when he made a correct decision which was backed by UEFA.

it's a done deal. carry on with thug tactics and intimidating refs and all you'll get is a ban from international competition. and good riddance...

Uefa have backed him up in saying it was a foul. so just take it like men, no need to ruin somebody's life.
well actually they didn't ...
which is why Meier didn't get to ref any of the last 3 games

Euro 2004 final referee Markus Merk has hit out at the English press for their treatment of fellow official Urs Meier.
Meier disallowed Sol Campbell's header in England's loss to Portugal and has since been vilified in some newspapers.

Merk said: "All the referees are very angry at the behaviour of certain English journalists

"It cannot be right for the press to harass a person who is trying to do his best and we cannot accept that people follow him into his private life."

Merk added: "There can never be a perfect match and the sad thing is that it was a wonderful game of football.

"It is not even a question of whether a referee is right or if he is wrong - that is not the issue."

Merk was backed in his criticism of the English press by the world's most high-profile referee, Pierluigi Collina.

The Italian referee said: "The difference between the public figure and the private person should be respected.

"The private life should be respected

On Monday, Uefa's referees' committee had thrown its full support behind Meier and produced television pictures which it claimed supported the Swiss official's verdict.

The way some of the English press have blamed Urs Meier after a correct decision is completely unacceptable," said committee president Volker Roth.

"To go into his private life, to show his wife, his car and put an England flag on his house is unacceptable.

"If the press reacts in this way we must reconsider and say clearly and openly this is not a good way."

Some English newspapers published Meier's telephone number and email address after he disallowed Campbell's header in the dying minutes of England's quarter-final defeat to Portugal.

Meier said he had been badly disturbed by the reaction to his decision.

"It is a heavy attack, it's not the right way to deal with such decisions," he said.

I was 100% certain it was a foul and it was correct to rule out the goal

Urs Meier

"The phone has been ringing constantly all day and night. The email is blocked, the office is blocked.

"I feel it is not the right way to handle a decision, whether it was right or wrong. It is not right to go into the private life of the referee.

"The referee must be protected from the journalists, from all people. He is the only man in the field who is really neutral and I have not been protected from the English newspapers."

The referees' committee said it had viewed the incident many times on video and unanimously agreed that defender John Terry's challenge on Portugal keeper Ricardo was a foul.

Referees' supremo Kenneth Ridden added: "The referees committee discussed the matter thoroughly and we believe he made the right decision.

"The feeling of the committee after looking at the incident several times is to support the referee and his decision.

"Holding is an offence and must be punished according to the laws."

Add the Portuguese to that list. I liked the English team until I heard all the sh*te the BBC broadcast team spoke. After that I wanted them to fail so these guys would shut up. Unfortunately, they are still bitching.
