Villa agree £62.6m Lerner takeover

Aston Villa have reached agreement for American billionaire Randy Lerner to take control of the Premiership club in a £62.6million deal.

Villa made announced the deal with a statement to the Stock Exchange on Monday morning.

Lerner's takeover brings to an end Doug Ellis' long reign as chairman.

Ellis, 82, has run the Midlands club since 1982 but also had an earlier spell as chairman in 1968.

Ellis said: "It has been my sincere pleasure to have been involved with Aston Villa these many years, both as chairman and as a substantial shareholder. The club has been an enormous and immensely enjoyable part of my life.

"I wish to thank the many staff at Aston Villa over the years for making the club what it has been and what it is. I am sure this transaction will be the beginning of a new chapter in Aston Villa's proud history."

Lerner, who inherited most of his fortune from his father Al, the founder of the MBNA credit card company, had headed one of a number of consortia hoping to buy out Ellis.

Local businessman and fan Michael Neville led one group while another was put together by Nicholas Padfield QC. Athole Still, the agent of former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, was also believed to be interested in taking over.

Ellis, who had heart bypass surgery last year and has previously undergone treatment for cancer, recently announced he was willing to sell his 39% stake.

Talks were instigated with interested parties but Lerner, who conducted his offer through his company Reform Acquisitions Ltd, emerged as the favourite over the weekend after earlier appearing to drop out.

Lerner said: "It is my belief and the basis for my bid to acquire Aston Villa Football club that it can compete at the highest level within the Premiership and in Europe.

"The club has a rich history and a long tradition of passionate fan support."

Villa's fortunes have slumped in recent seasons with the club only managing 16th place in the Premiership.

There was unrest over the summer with a statement, purportedly from the players, criticising Ellis and his running of the club.

Ellis, who first took charge from 1968-75 before returning seven years later, earned the nickname 'Deadly Doug' for his reputation for sacking managers.

He worked with 14 managers during his time, the latest being Martin O'Neill, who was appointed earlier this month following the departure of David O'Leary.

Looks like I'm finally gonna get my wish: a Doug Ellis-free Aston Villa. However, it comes with a caveat: an American is now running the ship. We all know how well the Glazers were received when they took over Manchester United, but the majority of Villa fans think that anything is an improvement after Deadly Doug. However, I'm taking this bit of news with a grain of salt. Randy Lerner has reached a crossroads with this club already. He can either restore Aston Villa to former glory, and possibly even have us win the Champions League one day in the distant future, or he can complete what Deadly has done, and send us to obscurity like Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest have done so recently. I will be casting a cautious eye towards what Lerner will be doing over the next several months, as he builds his foundation. Either its going to be a strong one, where the club go from to strength to strength on and off the pitch, or it could be a weak one, which could very well see us spending the next decade-plus in the Championship, with a possible detour to League One taking place.

Well, with Oneill in charge you should do well. It all depends on how much money you get from selling Baros and how much the new chairman decides to give you, because with your current squad your looking to be going nowhere fast. Btw, who have Villa been linked with this summer? (:/)

Hopefully he will not be like Glazer. (C)
He wont, because he doesn't have to put the club in debt in order to buy it. Aston Villa wasn't worth nearly as much as Manchester United, therefore they wont have the same problems.

way less.

Exciting times for Villa this, been one of the UK's boring teams for too long now, as the UK's second largest city, Birmingham could really do with a good team for once.

Im thankful this puts a halt to Villa's slide. They were threatening to slip toward obscurity this coming season. Now, new manager, new, filthy rich owner, and they have a rosier outlook.

Im thinking they pull a pompey in the winter window. Theyve lost their chance to make quality additions as the summer is almost over, but I bet even if theyre midtable they splash out quite a bit in January. With or without that, I think O'Neill will prove his worth

wouldn't it be funny if aston villa became a chelsea

no that wont happen,,he is investing money in the inferstucter and not buying every player under the sun which i think is great for the league and Irish and british players as martin o neill will have better training and youth systems and of course money but not millions upon millions
