I get the feeling Materazzi's reputation hurt him there a bit, as the foul wasnt all that awful and this was a pretty good ref. I laughed at Dave OBrien calling him a "highly regarded central defender" though

If that's what happened, GREAT piece of gamesmanship by Grosso. Look, you always hate diving when it happens against your own team, and the Aussies have every right to be mad that the ref gave the penalty if he truly did dive, but if you sell it to the ref and get it, that's part of the game. I said the same thing when Rivaldo got the Turkish player sent off. If it works, brilliant. I dislike Italy quite a bit, but I admire that kind of gamesmanship. Good job Grosso. Bad job ref for being suckered into giving the call, but good job Grosso.

It really wasnt a dive in the traditional sense. It was like nothing I had really ever seen. Neill went down long before Grosso had gotten to him, which was stupid in its own right. Grosso then played it around him, and leapt over him. Now, that was the strange part to me. Neill was just an immobile body at the edge of the 6. If Grosso wanted, im sure he couldve just gone around him, but instead he leapt, and it almost seemed like he (anyone else with me here?) dragged his left foot down intentionally to catch Neill's body and fall. Again, i would think its better to pass the defender and go in on goal 1 v 1, but he sold it well, and it was a great bit of skill to get to that point at all

I can't see how some of you think Australia was better. They were passing the ball around all the time and couldn't convert the very few chances they got. Italy's defence was solid as was obvious and I must say defending is still part of the game so Italy's defence > Australia's offence. Italy's offence on the other hand was more positive in the first half and came very close alot.

The penalty call was ridiculous though
