WCQ: Italy-Belarus [P+R]

I am not too dissapointed with the result overall. ;)

ALthough i think a draw would have been fair, since Italy dominated the first half and Belarus has a whole lot of chances in the 2nd. Just wait till you come to Minsk. Hleb brothers will be waiting for you and unless you change a coach or he will change his thinking, than Belarus will triumph :p !

Seriously though what the hell is with Lippi? (H)

As for Romaschenko he is a mid and had a couple good seasons with Gaziatespor helping them get to the UEFA cup, now i think he is with Trabsonspor

nothing, he won.

and because that bastard #9 scores 2 amazing goals that no team on earth could have stopped, you think that belarous deserved a tie? no
italy had far more chances, hit the post, missed goals by an inch.
it should have been a larger difference in the score.
but nontheless, belarus had a good second half

From what i hear, it was another unconvincing win and the subs weren't great either.

And Belarus deserved a tie, because Buffon had to make lots of great saves.

BTW #9 has a name, you know.

u heard wrong
totti had 3-4 chances
gilardino 1-2
(thats ontop of the chances which they scored)
plus the own goal belarus almost scored when they hit the cross bar
belarus had about 5 chances and scored 3

didnt wanna copy and paste it.

yea, buffon had 2 great saves, but your keeper (i also know he has a name) also had more great saves, so theres no point in saying your team deserved a draw because if that is the case, then italy deserved more goals than 4
italy won convincingly period

Wow, you Italians just get so defensive when it comes to the NT.

Didn't Totti score a PK and from a free kick too? So, what difference does it make that Belarus scored two nice goals. That shouldn't be held against them...

The fact that this game was also held in Italy further shows the problems with your team, whether you want to believe it or not.

erm, ok

italy scored 2 goals from spot kicks. so not counting those 2, and the 2 goals scored by maxin or whatever, it would have been 2-1 with italy having more chances than the other team and playing better.

i dont understand whats the problem with you guys

we have problems, sure, what team doesnt? but we still manage to play better than the opponents (with exception of the game against slovenia) and more importantly, to score more goals which is the only thing that really matters

we play good, belarus did too, but we won. fair and square
so why does people have to say "oh we deserved a tie at least" when they clearly lost? its ok if you lose 0-1 and you have like 15 chances to score and the other team only has 1, and still its not that ok because if you didnt manage to score in 15 chances then wtf are you doing in the field??? the other team was better because they actually scored which is the jist of the game

;)

and im not defensive because its my nt, i would say the same thing about any team or any game. its just a stupid comment to say we deserved more

Totti Powered Italy Prevail In Seven Goal Thriller

10/13/2004 11:21:00 PM
It didn’t go as easy as planned, but Italy were able to prevail over a brave Belarus side 4-3 in Parma on Wednesday evening, a result that allows the Azzurri to regain the lead in the Group 5 standings.
Italy began the game knowing that a victory would allow them to claim top of the group again as Norway had been able to defeat Slovenia earlier in the evening, however in the opening moments of the match Lippi’s side resembled the slow and unmotivated team that lost to Slovenia on the weekend.

It took a huge present from Belarus defender Korytko to wake the Italians up as his totally avoidable hand-ball off an Italian cornerkick gifted Italy with a penalty kick on 26 minutes.

Francesco Totti put the Italians ahead on his second spot effort, as his first one was disallowed by the referee for too many players in the box.

After the lead Italy began entertaining the crowd with spectacular plays.

On the most stylish of these Zambrotta magnificently connected with Totti, who after inserting himself perfectly inside the box, was unable to get a shot off with the goal at his mercy.

But the play was all from over as Totti’s Roma team-mate Daniele De Rossi picked the ball up on the edge of the box and hit the back of the net with a low and powerful drive.

It was the 33rd minute and the game appeared already wrapped up for the Azzurri, but in reality there were still many chapters to write in the 90 minute story.

Most of the following action took place on the other side of the break, when Belarus got back into the game on 53 minutes through a fantastic long range drive by Romaschenko that hit the top right corner of the Italian net.

The goal handed Belarus new energies, and they started to push the home side into their own half.

The Belarus pressure forced Lippi to replace the very disappointing Diana and an average Oddo with Perrotta and Cannavaro, who immediately gave the struggling Azzurri a much better defensive cover.

Shortly after Totti decided it was time to put things back into order as his majestic freekick beat the Belarus keeper to give the Italians a two goal lead.

But Lippi was not allowed to relax this evening.

Just four minutes after Totti's beauty, Gattuso extended the Italian suffering for slightly longer as he lost the ball inside the box, thereby allowing Bulyga to score with a low drive aimed at the far post.

Then emotions reached maximum level on 84 minutes, as home-boy Alberto Gilardino picked up the keeper’s rebound of a Zambrotta strike to score his first ever goal with la Nazionale.

Game Over? Not just yet as Belarus’s Romaschenko took advantage of a freekick on 90 minutes to score his second of the evening. Buffon once again appeared slow to react to the Dinamo Moscow midfielder's strike.

That was to be the last emotion of a game that saw Italy play better than they did against Slovenia, but still have a lot to improve, especially on the defensive side of things.

My condolences to Santino and Mark, but the Italian club showed the game, so Mikey got to see.

Overall, this was a pretty entertaining game.

I have nothing to do til my own game tonight, so ill give some analysis to those who missed game.

First goal: Totti PK - a really bad call by the ref, this was a lot like the penalty called on Panucci against Real Madrid a couple weeks ago. I said that PK was a bad call, so id be a hypocrite to say differently now. Totti had to retake penalty and fired a scorcher top right

Second goal: De Rossi - This was a great sequence for the Azzurri. Before the goal, There was a great buildup followed by an amazing dummy by Gilardino which left Totti in the clear, he never got a good shot off and ball was cleared.... right to De Rossi who rounded a defender and scored a with a great bending shot. Unsavable

Third goal: Romaschenko - you cant really fault anybody on D for this goal. Romajsjdsjd just unleashed a great shot from far distance. i wont go as far as saying it was 'unstoppable', but still a great shot.

Fourth Goal: Totti - vintage free kick from Totti. the ball was placed in the perfect spot for right footer, and Totti kicked it to the right side of goal, when most people wouldve went to the left. THIS was unstoppable.

Fifth Goal: Bulyga - Friggin Gattuso. Really, this couldve been called a foul, cause gattuso's leg was kicked as he was about to clear, but seeing as Italys penalty was sketchy, i guess things evened out. But again, ive defended Gattuso A LOT, and todays game was not a ringing endorsement. 20 minutes before this goal, he gave away the ball again in the box and Buffon had to make a good save.

Sixth Goal: this was me when Gilardino scored

"OH!!!!" (when Zambrotta shot was saved)

"Ya!" (when Italy scores)

"YAA!!!!! (when i realized Gilardino scored)

:D

Seventh Goal: Meh.

Overall, even though Italy allowed 3 goals, you cant really say they defence was poor. Well, you can blame Gattuso, who was at fault on final goal as well.

Ratings (ya, im really bored ova he')

Buffon - 5 - Made some great saves, but couldve maybe done more on Romaschenko's long strike. Was in no way the reason Italy allowed 3 goals.

Nesta - 6.5 - another solid game. Italy better produce another 'nesta' soon. (and no, Ferrari and Bonera arent the answer)

Materazzi - 6.5 - a quiet game, and for a defender thats a good thing. He's a better player than people give him credit for.

Oddo - 5.5 - pretty quiet throughout. Italy played down the left (because of Zambrotta) all game, so he wasnt really a factor pushing forward. I give him the .5 cause he was useful defensively today.

Pancaro - 5 - I dont like the guy. Shave your head, you look like a stronzo. He didnt play bad, and he didnt play well. Hopefully Lippi replaces him with Parisi for now on.

Gattuso - 4 - Wow. Played well, except for any times he had the ball. After a string of fine performances for NT, this was a disappointment.

De Rossi - Mi Scusi Signore Pirlo, you no longer start anymore.

Diana - linked up well with Totti, but his final crosses werent that great.

Zambrotta - Best player for Italy/Juventus. put him at LB, RM, LM, it doesnt matter, he dominates everywhere. Oh, but Roberto Carlos is better and deserves more praise:rolleyes:

Totti - Bravo, Francesco. He couldve scored 5 goals today. All his doubter (NEVER Mikey), can all suck on a lemon.

Gilardino - EH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Scores his first goal for Azzurri. Hes gotten better every game. I hope Trap chokes on a fig (i keed i keed;)). Him and Totti linked very well, and i cant wait til Cassano returns and they all play together.

Subs:

Perrotta: His inclusion made the team worse.

Blasi - N/A

Cannavaro - N/A

Lippi - 1

Ya, they won. But remember, this is Belarus, not exactly a world class side. Lippi basically showed his true colours today, and proved me right in that the coach of Italy may have changed names, but its still the same mentality.

He brang on Blasi and Perrotta, so Italy had 3 defensive midfielders, than took off an attacking RB for Cannavaro. If he had another sub left, im sure Pelizzoli wouldve came on for Gilardino. I wouldnt care at all if he was fired today.

That was a great match. Totti had an awesome game, Belarus gave them a hard fight over the whole 90 minutes.

Belarus are definitely a football nation on the rise. Their best player didn't even play.

:)

Thank you! He knows what he is talking about.

And when i say Belarus deserve a tie, i am speaking as a supporter of the underdogs, so obviously i would be a little bias towards some things, you shouldn't take it too closely.

I didn't get to see this but frankly I'm disappointed but not surprised. 4-3 against Belarus? I knew Italy always won by only 1 goal, but against Belarus I thought it would be an exception.

Maybe I'm just under-rating them as a nation. I've never seen them play but I just assumed they were another minnow like Luxembourg. I must be wrong. Nobody scores 3 past Italy's defence without being good.

Still, why can't we be better, f-cking hell just win well for once without any slip-ups. That's what I want to see in future.

That's what i said, don't make me tell you the notable results Belarus had and among them are wins over Netherland, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Wales and the list goes on. You guys don't look at other countries only at the big 6 and when some country performs well you are surprised. In 2 years, Belarus will be 3 times better and could actually finish 2nd or maybe even first in their group. They get better every year.
