Lippi demands Azzurri victory
Friday 25 March, 2005
Italy boss Marcello Lippi has told his players that he expects nothing less than a win against Scotland.

"I have just one thought about the match, I want the three points," the tactician stated on Friday.

The Azzurri resume their World Cup qualification at the San Siro on Saturday, with the tactician expected to field an offensive looking 4-3-3 system.

"I won’t announce my side even if everyone of you have all understood it," added the former Juventus maestro.

"It is just important that everyone gives their best, no matter what system we use. We need a win as we will then have three tough away games to play."

Italy will understandably start the tie as hot favourites for victory but Lippi isn’t underestimating the Scots.

"Things have levelled out in this sport and nothing is easy anymore," he noted. "I just want a win. If we entertain as well then that will be a bonus.

"Scotland can play in a wide variety of ways but we must just be focused and leave nothing to chance."

Francesco Totti will support Alberto Gilardino and Antonio Cassano in a trident attack, but Lippi hinted that the Roman will be given a ‘free’ role.

"Totti is an attacking midfielder rather than a striker," he explained. "But we’ll see how the game develops because I could change things during the 90 minutes."

The Scotland clash will also allow the boss to finally field Antonio Cassano for the first time since his summer appointment.

"I wanted to get to know him and I have done," noted Lippi. "Cassano just needs to stay calm and play football the way he does without any extra responsibilities.

"I have an excellent squad under me and they have great faith in the work that we are doing right now. I’m very happy with what we have done this week."

Italy (probable): Buffon; Bonera, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Chiellini; Camoranesi, Pirlo, Gattuso; Totti, Gilardino, Cassano

Two goals in the space of six minutes ensured the Italian Under-21 side sank Scotland to notch up their fifth win on the trot.

Claudio Gentile's Azzurrini were looking to maintain their 100 per cent record in the fifth game of the qualifying campaign and welcomed their Scottish counterparts. Roma goalkeeper Gianluca Curci earned a start after his impressive form for the Giallorossi, while Fiorentina's Gianpaolo Pazzini partnered Cagliari benchwarmer Rolando Bianchi.

Alessandro Rosina's long-range effort was deflected off target, while Pazzini's glancing header from a Potenza free kick was inches wide of the woodwork.

Italy had a great chance to take the lead on the half-hour mark when Atalanta man Marco Motta's cross came in, but both Pazzini and Rosina had close-range efforts charged down by the desperate Scottish defence.

The first real Scottish chance came on the stroke of half-time when McCunnie's effort whistled past the post, while Andrea Lazzari's volley was wayward.

Mantovani's error almost let Riordan in for a chance in the second half, while Curci comfortably got behind Wilson's effort in an uninspired encounter.

The deadlock was eventually broken after 65 minutes. 18-year-old Atalanta starlet Motta ran down the right flank and put in a fine cross for Rolando Bianchi to turn in.

McCunnie's shot was easily saved and moments later Italy thumped the woodwork with Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani on Pazzini's assist as the game finally sprung to life.

The Azzurrini ensured the points were safe soon after, as Parma youth product Rosina - currently playing in Serie B with Verona - curled in a splendid left-foot strike from the edge of the box to sink Scotland.

A fine save prevented Bianchi adding to his tally on the counter-attack and a late shot from Brescia substitute Daniele Mannini was parried at the near post, but the Scots could find no response after that devastating double blow.

Italy remain top of Group Five with 15 points, having scored 10 goals and conceded just one, while Scotland continue to prop up the standings with two points from four games.
