He's underrated, but he's a really GREAT player, IMO. 
As much as I hate the man I have to say he's good, although not as a striker. He's scored 15 goals or more in two out of ten seasons which is pretty cack for a forward player. His game's not even, one minute he world class the next he strays away from the game, and this happens way too often, the man's injured a lot too 
He doesn't have to score every game if when it counts he produces the goods. Heck, on Wednesday, he had the Madrid defenders falling and stumbling all over the place, and topped the performance with an unstoppaple nearpost shot after a series of fakes. Pretty damn good if you ask me... he's a bit underrated in the game.
i haven't seen del piero all that many times, but my impression is that he isn't a real threat when he takes on defenders 1-v-1. but he's great at slashing runs and has a great first touch. he also draws defenders off well, creating space for teammates. and his shot can be deadly.
1 on 1 with Del Piero is not a good thing, man. He has a lot of tricks.. I remember one game in the C League last year where two Celtic defenders had him locked up.. the next minute, he did this lazy looking turn and left them skating AWAY from him... sent in a perfect cross for Trezegurt to score. Too easy.

Making Madrid defenders fall and stumble isn't hard nowadays, just look what Eto'o, Nihat, Kovacevic and many other less knows players have done the last couple of months. That's a low comparison, of course he's going to look like God if one thinks that Hierro is still one of the best defenders.
I agree that he's underrated in the game though.
