I'm really looking forward to The Machinist. I havent been too impressed with Bale thusfar, I didnt even think he was that good in American Psycho, but I think I must have missed his other biggies so hopefully when I do see The Machinist I will appreciate him alot more.

well his role in The Machinist, dramatically isn't very impressing because it's a very dark movie and he plays a really f*cked up character, so he doesn't get a great chance to shine there. It's really impressive what he's done with himself though, almost unbeliavable... if you watched him in American Psycho you see that he's got a really athletic body. In The Machinist he looks like nothing more than a pile of bones. I can't think of any other actor who would do anything like that, I mean that's really putting your health at risk for a role in an indie movie... it's crazy and it really shows how much Christian Bale is trying to get his career to another level.

Robert De Niro in Raging Bull :p

There was a feature in Empire magazine about how Bale changed he physic depending on what the part requires, thats the sort of commitment that takes actors to the top so I'm not surprised he's doing well and you guys all like him.

The Machinist was :o !!!

My recomentadions:

Amores Perros (you have to get it subtitled in Spanish, although it's not the same subtitled if you knew spanish I guarantee you'd think it was much bettter) Still a grea movie though.

Nicotina (again subtitled in Spanish)...p.s. if you smoke, you might think about it twice after watching this.

Wow, great thread! I will definately be checking out City of God and Virgin Suicides after it seemed to get everyones stamp of approval

My favorite of alltime has got to be A Bridge Too Far. It was never well recieved, due in part to it being a WWII movie in the latter days of Vietnam, and there is nothing particularly stunning about it. But its a great story of timeless heroism with a great cast: Hopkins, Connery, Hackman (playing a Pole, nonetheless!) Caine, Olivier, Gould, Redford, Ryan O'Niell, Hardy Kruger, Jimmy Caan, Edward Fox, Liv Ulman, and a pre-Cheers John Ratzenberger :p

If you like war films, its definately worth checking out, should you have nearly 3 good hours to kill. Its got no special effects, and isnt that grand in its cinematic scope, but the sacrifice it depicts is moving, and the final scene wrenches at my heart every time

I didnt think much of A Bridge Too Far - great cast I agree but I thought it was a weak storyline, too long and not to greatly done, plus many of the best castmembers, such a Gene Hackman, were totally wasted on parts they shouldnt be playing.

Thats good criticism because its so accurate. The ensemble cast did take alot away from the movie in the sense that some stars were central, and others, like Hackman and Caan, were peripheral. I kinda knew a little about the history of the battle when I saw it, so it brought what i had read to me in superb detail, as I saw it. It always felt like a classic triumph/tragedy tale to me, but I think this element too was overplayed by story of the Dutch family who is essentially decimated in the end. Personally, I thought the acting, all throughout, was supreme, in every role, by almost every character, my favorite being the staunch, unflinching Britishness of Hopkins, even when his small force is essentially destroyed by the end. Anyway, everyone has a movie that the world didnt like and they loved. Maybe this is mine?

I highly recommend Sideways.
I know quite a few of you have already seen it but the movie is so quirky, funny, well acted...it's got everything. Make sure you watch it!
Don't think it's boring because it focuses a lot on wine or vineyards, it's anything but boring!

Yeah, probably. I agree that the acting was top notch - but when it comes to war epics I much prefer Bridge Over the River Kwai and The Longest Day.

I'm yet to find one humorous moment in that movie. It was a snoozefest.

Yeah, I loved Sideways as a film in general, not just a comedy. The whole general theme was pretty funny and there were a couple of laughs out loud, but really it was more a nice little story with beautiful camerawork, good acting and some snappy dialogue - had a real foreign arthouse essense about it.

Well I watched Sideways yesterday and found it quite funny at times though it's definitely not intended to be a comedy.

As for Napoleon Dynamite, I didn't laugh once throughout the whole movie.

Guess I have a more refined humour that doesn't go with a bunch of retarded kids do stupid things.

actually, I thought the humour in Napoleon Dynamite was pretty refined, even if it didn't really seem so on the surface. It was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek satire on growing up/the whole high school experience. Maybe you'd have to grow up in North America to fully apprieciate some of the humour, I dunno..

I do kind of agree that it wasn't "HAHAHA!" funny, but I thought it was pretty good in a quirky sorta way.

Yeah, it was more a twisted, perculiar sort of humour. The best thing about that film was the decision to make Napoleon such an arsehole himself that when bad things happen to him, we can laugh without being bugged by our concience as he is such an unlikeable character. I thought it was really clever the way the story is totally minimal too, just an episode of his life. I didnt agree with people who proclaimed it fantastic or the best comedy of the year (like Simon Pegg did) but I did like it alot all the same.

yeah I really liked the simplicity too, you wanted to laugh at the characters, yet couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for them for being so lame (even if they themselves didn't realize it :D )

it also managed to be entertaining (IMO ofcourse) without sex, profanity, or a super-hot looking cast, which is something to be admired I think.

Yeah that's very true, one of the only good comedies to get a PG certificate for about 20 years.
