and I don't trust and like AMD ... Intell is the best ... P4-6 series are really performed and have really nice performances with Max ; Maya etc ...

I don't want to sound like an AMD fanboy here (in fact, I'm typing this on my Pentium III machine) but the A64's have better performance overall than the P4's, run A LOT cooler than them and are cheaper to boot. If I used Max/Maya all the time then personally I would be buying Operton's for it! Plus the A64 Venice's come out next week and they look absolutely fantastic from previews, overclocking to about 3ghz+. And 3ghz+ on an Athlon 64 has a P4 scaling of about 4-5ghz. On a stock cooler too! :o

Plus P4-6? As far as I am awate the Pentium 4 is the latest one, except for the Pentium M's, which is basically a quad-pumped Pentium III core. I read somewhere that the new Pentium 4's (the dual-core Smithfields) will not be called Pentium 4 but something else (like Pentium D, i can't remember what the letter was though) because Pentium 4 has a certain stigma attached to it, especially from members of the enthusiast community.

I still dont get your overclock to a quadro though. Please confirm that you just mean to increase the core/memory speed so as to give the same rendering performance as a quadro, because it's really bugging me now. I know guru3d very well by the way.

Alex, do you have socket 754 or socket 939? If it's 939 I think you'll probably have the A8V. :)

754, something like K8N-E Deluxe. Only dual channel is a letdown, (due to nforce3 754chipset) Might upgrade to 939 sometime later this year (that also means new gfx/mobo/cpu) :P

mine is:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2 GHz
256MB Ram
64MB Geforce 4 MX 440 (I know... it sucks)
A7V8X-X Asus mobo
LG DVD-CDRW combo
56k LG modem

no, I'm not happy with it... but I can't afford anything else so it'll have to do for at least the end of the year...

sure ... there's 7 or 8 days for waiting ... when I got it ; I will send you the core and memory speeds ...

for P4 ; I'm talking about CG ... AMD's has really good performance/prices for games ; it's right ... but I'm not buying this machine for gaming ... I'm buying it for making animations wia MAX , Maya , ZBrush etc ... I'm searching and seeking from 2-3 months and I can say P4's are better then AMD's in CG ... I know ; I must buy a workstation but I don't have so much money for workstations ; the prices are 5000 $ at least ... this is a passing machine for me ... in 3-4 years ; I'll buy a workstation or SGI ... but now ; I shall be contented with this machine ; I shall work and I will hope for making more money ...

Yeah, but I mean like dual Xeons and a motherboard can be had in the region of £400 these days :)

The new AMD A64 Venice computers look very interesting indeed - the 90nm Winchesters top speed was 2.2ghz on the 3500+, and the Venices look like they can overclock to 3ghz+! :rockman: But I'm too poor to replace my winchester, and I kinda like it (6) :$

Hmmm ; sounds interesting for AMD ... But anyway ; I made my choice ; but I'm still waiting for graphic card :nape: ... The ship comes next week :kader: ... the other parts are ready now but I can't use them because the board is PCI-E and I can't use any temporary graphic card ...

are you sure about motherboard and dual xeons cost 400£ ... I wish but it looks impossible ... because server cases starts from 400 $ ... but it could be ; I'm not sure because I didn't seek from 2-3 mouths for Xeons ; but I'm pretty sure it cost more than 400£ in Turkey ... but if I buy a dual xeons ; the graphic card must be a Quadro :fool: and Quadros (1300 and +) cost minimum 1000 $ on Turkey ... but in 3-4 yeras I'll buy them or a SGI machine ... :jambo:

Asus NCCH-DL - £150
2* Xeon Noncona 2.8ghz - £280
Comes to £430, pretty good. Places like ebay always have cheap stuff too. You don't have to buy a Quadro for Xeons either, any old crap will do.

The dual op's look great, especially with the nForce4 Professional chipset. We all know that Operton's own anything Intel can come up with :D

Although I guess the Pentium 4's/Xeon's double up as a central heating system  :boohoo:

can be ... but £430 is a little expensive for me now ... my CPU and my MB cost 661 $ ... you're talking about almost 900 $ ... and the server cases cost min. 400 $ ... so ; 1300 $ for a 2.8 ghz dual Xeon and a server case is practically impossible for me now ... my configuration cost almost 1500 $ with all parts ... but I'll buy it in a few years ... and I heard for AMD's make the temp. so hot ... the person said for a case with AMD processor : "it's the best way to defrost a deep-freezed cake" ... anyway ; my case is really good for cooling and I'll buy a liquid-cooling system in 2 months ... I don't have any cooling problem ...

and Opterons are really cool ... but many of animation studios use Xeons ... also Opterons are more expensive then Xeons ... but this processors (Xeon and Opteron) has a little-big problem with little DOS applications ... I saw a machine with dual Xeon which try to run a DOS app. and CPU usage is 100 % ... so the server has been kicked ... I heard the same thing with Opteron ... but it's not a really big problem ... we're not using little DOS applications ...

You need an extended-ATX case, which can be had for about £20 if you go generic.

I think your friend is talking about some of the older (very old) AMD processors like the Athlon Thunderbird/Palomino. The AMD Athlon 64 / AMD Operton series run A LOT cooler than the Pentium 4 / Xeon processors.

On water cooling here too, its all good :)

buy a SGI ... it's the best solution ... but the minimum price of SGI's is 10000 USD ... but if you want a PC ... you can buy my configuration except motherboard ... I have P5AD2E Premium of Asus ... it's 925 XE ... it's 32 bit ; but 64 bit CPU's works with it ... you can wait the real 64 bit motherboards and CPU's ... for example 945 and 955 series of Asus ... and minümum 2 GB of RAM ... DDR2 and 717 mhz of course ... when I have my graphic card ; I'll buy 1024 ram ... it's the best PC ... but I said ; SGI's are best solutions for Max and Maya ...
