What the hell have EA done with this game....

I must admit I've read all your posts over the past few years regarding gameplay etc, but I have always thought that the fifa series, although arcadish, was always fun to play. After persisting with the demo of World Cup 2002 I must say that I absolutely hate it. I never thought I would say it, but the drunken like tackling is atrocious, you can almost never get the ball cleanly, and it gives you no room for creativity as they tackle you with ease. This has been a huge letdown, I really hope sales (although I doubt it) will plummet and finally EA will take a long hard look at its game. Sorry for the rant.

i agree

World Cup 2002 looks like its going to be a very sad game. It is a shame that EA just doesnt learn from their mistakes. The "drunken like tackling" I dont think is so bad... it cracks me up when three defenders trip and fall all around you and start rolling on the ground... but then I realize that this is supposed to be a realistic portrayal of soccer...:(

Ye the game certainly does have alot of flaws.. i doubt it EA will ever learn cause the guys who develop the game being obviously talented in what they do have no idea about the game of football and how it is meant to be played.

EA blows :o

u guys suck

It is actually :o obvious that u loosers do not play soccer in real life. The tackles are the closest to the real thing; This probably one of best styles of tackling created for a soccer game. It shouldn't be easy to get the ball, infact, now u have to think twice before making a stupid tackle in the game cos not only might u get a card, u will only be causing ya self more problems by letting the striker get away. Besides, the tackles are usually easy if you are tackling from the front. The game is good, since this is first fifa series that every body have very different opinions of good or bad. Thus, it means EA have caught different taste of several people with different diversities in soccer gaming. They deserve it this time I think.

In all fairness I have to disagree with your assesment of the tackling. I've played soccer for 20 years of my life, and for 3 of those years in first division in my state, and I cant remember the last time I or any other player went on a drunken rampage after attempting a tackle. I'm glad that EA have attempted at improving the game in the ways they have, but it does need work, in particular in this game the tackling needs to be fairer. You cant have 3 of your players trying to do soft tackles and all 3 of them falling over themselves and not get the ball, this just does not happen. I do see your point that not all tackles in real life are clean, but some if not most are, and that is a rarity in this game.

While I have not been playing football for 20 years (just 2), I have never tripped over my own shadow in an attempt to get the ball, nor have I witnessed it.

It's obvious that there are (will be) some problems with the game? But I think, that after the years we didn't expect a perfect game from EA, as always.
But this game has impressed me more than any other part of the series. Of course the "drunken tackling" looks silly sometimes, but look at the other features...I think that the new"airplay" system is just fantastic. It makes the game a lot more complex, and we don't see the same moves so often...The players now really make MORE realistic contact with each other then before...

And you guys, who have been playing football for a kazillion years...I did play football too, not for decades, but I know how things work on the big field. And this so called drunken tackling isn't something special at all. Of course it doesn't happen all the time, but hey...we can only see it in the game too when our player is behind the one who we want to tackle. And it isn't unusual at all, that this moved is used in that situation...so try to tackle from the front or from other directions, why don't you try not letting the player go "through" you? That shouldn't be so difficult after years and years of experience :)....

no offence...

Well what really pisses me off is that EA have never been able to match the greatness of FIFA 98 with all the advances there've been. I mean the freaking game is 5 years old and it's still better than the crap they **** every year and then sell to us for 40 bucks. :(

Forget the tackling.

Despite the tackling looking a little like that drunken master character in Virtua Fighter I think it's probably the most accurate tackling yet in a Fifa game. At least now you're not guaranteed to get the ball every time which would have been far more unrealistic.

The biggest problem are those stupid freaking headers. I hadn't played the demo for a week until last night and I was losing 1-0. Within the space of 2 minutes I had managed two bullet headers from my own half way line that looked like they would have taken the back of the net out if the net hadn't been made of some kind of steel weave!

I would have less gripes with this game if EA hadn't put in this dumb feature, what were they thinking? It happens too often. If you play a ball in the air anywhere around the halfway line you can get these power headers to work accidentally so it's not like I can just stop doing them.

Please EA, if you don't do anything else for a patch for this game (and I'm sure you won't anyhow) please get rid of these stupid freaking headers.

Yeah i have to agree with you. The thing is, at least for me, it seems like sometimes the headers are like meteors and sometimes they are just normal. Sometimes i think the heading looks incredibly realistic, with them jumping and aiming their head in the right direction, but then suddenly one of them simply nods their head and the ball flies off it at like 34000 miles per hour.

No.

Out of normality..... no, they haven't responded.

They never do to anything. they don't respond to any emails, tech help lines or anything. Too freaking arrogant.

For some reason I find that "serious soccer" and "America" just doesnt go hand in hand quite well....

Let me tell you something about "soccer" 1)NOBODY does that drunken tackle thingie, and 2)NOBODY drops off to the ground when they try to tackle somebody. These things simply dont happen in professional football. If they did then its the exception rather than the rule. Its just silly. You might find it at a school match or a weekend game at the local park, but in a game like FIFA, its simply rediculous. Why wont they put back all the "skillzz" moves from the previous games? Cos it just doesnt happen in real life. Not on a professional level atleast.

Now I dont know about America, but to the rest of the world FIFA is just crap....any football loving gamers can see that.

they SHOULD put skill moves into the game, and balance them with the abilities of the star players - only the really good players can do such moves, as just in real life.
Please don't say that you don't see moves like that in the real life, because if it is so, then you've never seen a good game before. There was Littbarski, or Ronaldo, or here is Figo, Rivaldo and Totti now (just to mention a few names), who did/do fantastic "special moves" and they are really successful with them most of time. If you've never seen such things before, then try seraching for the video `ronaldo does a maradona.avi`...

And they should improve their passing system even more, so we can really play FOOTBALL...

Yea, that's right. SPIN your way into the 16yard box.

Have I seen skill moves in real life? Yes. Did they really mean anything? No, not really. Is it essential to a footballer? No. Can we do without them? Certainly. Would a coach reject a player if he cant do a super-15touch-heading juggle or a 1080 spin over 5 defenders? Definitely not. Skill moves are just for shows(ok, not all of them). Sure it happens once in a while and quite entertaining, granted even some of the better players pulled them off really well. And managed to earn them a goal or two. But within the whole context of the sport, they're just trivial stuff. Like I said before, exception rather than the rule. EA better fix the gameplay first before they start thinking about skill moves....;)
