Whats the deal with Real Madrids financial situation

Although it sometimes apears they have an endless stream of money, in this day and age, no one does. Not even Ferrari in F1.

The rumor I have heard (and was mentioned by Martin Tyler during our coverage of the Madrid-Juve game) was that they are in fact in massive debt, and it is only down to the intervention of the Spanish government that keeps them going, by either (a) undewriting all their repayments or (b) keeping the banks off their back, because it is imoptant to have Real (Royal) Madrid winning.

Wasn't Lazio ordered to sell off its players (including their heart and soul, Nesta) because of their debt, before they could buy.

Real Madrid had a huge debt but they sold their training camp in the best zone of Madrid and that was a lot of money. Other teams complain because that soil was declared as "green soil" but the council changed that and now it's possible to make big buildings there. I don't know about the past, but nowadays the government help was changing the status of that area. Doing so, they could sell it for around €500M 3 years ago. With the money they payed the debt, they bought Figo, Zidane and Ronaldo, and they also building a new training camp.
But I think they have run out of money again, they are not in big debt but they won't be able to buy players like last 3 seasons without selling someone before

I just feel that it isn't really fair that a club like Lazio (who I am definitly NO fan of by the way) is forced by the authorities (not sure if it was the Italian federation or UEFA) to sell players in order to meet debts, where in spain Madrid is simply bailed out by the governemnt, either directly or indirectly (such as re-zoning team owned land for comercial development).

Imagine how easy a game of championship manager would be if everytime you ran out fo money, the government just topped it up.

I heard that one of Reals biggest fans was a Spanish Gangster. He gave them money whenever they needed it and conducted large deals with them when they wanted to sell off land.

Well if Real Madrid is in fact in debt then their being knocked out of the Champions League could definitely have some undesired effects on the changes they make to their squad during the summer.

There's no big difference in being knocked out of the CL in the semis or in winning the final. The real loss is being kicked out after the qualifying round or first turn, like Bayern and Liverpool did.

Close. But I'm Northern Irish. Not Spanish. :D

There is probably a logic too it. Real = Royal. Real Madrid = Royal Madrid.

How were Real formed? Royal family created them?

Maybe some Real Madrid fans I.E. Not the glory hunters because I doubt they would know, could reveal the history of Real in a few paragraphs.

Real Madrid is not in debt. and the government dont fund them. Their training facilities were in the middle of Madrid which is very expensive land right now, so they sold it, and paid their debt with that.

Barcelona is in serious debt, because they have spent a lot of money brining players and they havent won anything in the last 4 years

****ing roll on! 4 years now?! ****e that's bollocks.

If clubs want big players, then they have to start winning and keep winning.

How serious is the debt? Millions wise.

And to think, Barcelona still dont want to have a sponsor on their shirts.

I know about their tradition of never having a sponsor on their shirts ever before, but in the current financial climate, that would surely help them...No?

yeah.. but so far they have always voted no.. in my opinion.. they shouldnt put publicity on the shirts.. even if it would help their economy. somethings are sacred..

the reason they could sell the land for so much was because the government re-zoned it for them, so whoever bought it could place commercial developments on the land. If thats not government help...

the government re-zone areas all the time.. its not like it was an exception.. as a matter of fact barcelona got the same deal from their city mayor a few years back..
