What's the 'Real' meaning of this?

Can some of you tell me what 'Real' stands for in Spanish...because there are some Spanish clubs with 'Real'on them(eg.Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Real Oviedo.)

'Real' stands for 'Royal'. It is accorded to these clubs for great achievements and when clubs exist for 100 years, for instance.

I just thought it was a preatty word to make a team sound better.

PS. I know spanish, but I still thought it was just a non-meaningfull word.

It means Royal, and it´s given by the royal house to those teams that request it. It doesn´t much matter with years of existence.

well real sociead isnt royal i understand real madrid. in my country which is turkey most most most of the teams have a SPOR in the end like GAZIANTEPSPOR ANTALYASPOR KOCAELISPOR GIRESUNSPOR
