It's generally agreed that there are different kinds of intelligence, however an IQ test is made to measure a specific type - logic, problem solving etc.

I think the g factor is more accepted nowadays.

Doesn't Lampard have the highest IQ ever recorded by a Mensa test in Britain?

By a football player, maybe.

You try too hard to appear intelligent.

And this is coming from someone with Samuel Beckett in his avatar.

do I? he was being condescending, I don't like that.

Condescending is when someone speaks down to you, as if you're inferior to them. Now are you sure that's what you mean?

It wasn't because of the comment. It's the searching for the IQ thread, posting your genius-level internet IQ, the french philosopher in your avatar, latin quote in your sig, classical music posts, etc.

I think you're a good guy, and I get it, I do that sort of stuff too (thankfully much less now than, say, 3-4 years ago), but it comes off as forcefully pretentious.

Does he post on the What are you reading? thread? That's the worst.

I agree that the thread has 'look at how smart I am, I read this' quality (I certainly contribute to it). I like that thread, though, because I love literature and have discovered some good books through that thread. Discussing novels (like movies) is fun, and telling people what you read is a good way to find people who share your interests (allowing you to discuss topics you enjoy).

It's definitely a preferable way to showing off than expounding useless trivia in every discussion since that serves little more than to show off, whereas movie/book thread discussions could allow you to connect with other members.

I was only joking. I can definitely see the sense in the thread.

It's much better than trying to post in as many different languages as possible.

I said that the test probably means nothing more than you're as smart as me, whatever that means. Didn't think I was being condescending.

And fuck you Alex, don't talk shit about my thread.

Oh yeah, speaking in different languages is the absolute worst. That and making inside jokes with yourself.

Highest ever recorded by the company that administered the test. He's actually highly intelligent though.

Yeah, Lampard is definitely among the smartest in football (at least in any 'measurable' way). He's also handsome, total package.

Hehe, ok, I got it, but that's what I really like. I got to a point of my life when things didn't really matter to me, as I later found out, was an existential crisis. It was really bad, it was like 6 months when I really didn't feel alive(There's a quote from Dostoyevsky that can describe everything perfectly but I didn't find it in English). But randomly one day I stumbled across with a piece of Tchaikovsky in youtube and when I listened to it I felt so alive, it was such and undescriptible feeling, since then I can't stop listening to that music, it makes me really happy(the latin quote in my sig is from Carmina Burana). Later on, I was in a library and someone left in a table The Myth of Sisyphus, I had read in school The Stranger, so I thought it would be interesting, and it really was! It was like reading myself. All his ideas, all his thoughts are in sync with mine, that why I love Camus so much. I kept reading, Sartre, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Dostoyevsky, Kafka, their ideas made me realize I was not alone.

And why this thread? I don't know, it was randomic, it's not the first 10 years old thread I revive.

"But if it's any consolation" This bit was what it made me think that.

It's not your interests that are 'bad', it's that when you post about them, you only post about these 'high culture' ones, and you do so in a fashion that seems like you're consciously trying to shape your image. I like Camus, too, but I also like Jersey Shore.

I miss Pauly D.

Maybe it seems, but it is really not how I think. I don't even relate classical music with 'high culture' because that is not at all how I found it. But I don't know how to change that perception, should I post more normal stuff? I like Pixies and The White Stripes.

I always considered myself smarter than my peers, and I have come to find out now that my peers were much much much more intelligent than the average person. But at the same time I know that I'm not a transcendent genius, so I don't know what point level that starts at, but I'm below it.

I agree with you that many of us can consider ourselves more intelligent than most in our society, but the issue with that is that those people tend to be unsuccessful so being above them doesn't mean much. The goal should be to be exceptional.
