1 less model on the screen gives a slight performance boost, call it cutting corners and cheating on the developers part to gain a few more frames per second. It was most apparent last year with Fifa2004 for the PC featuring a ref while at least the PS2 version didn't

As with any lowest common denominator game development you must consider the low end specs that the game may be running at. There are constant tradeoffs and compromises that must be met so the game will run on older or budget systems.
If they REALLY wanted to.. they could make a High-End only PC version of FIFA right now that would probably be like how Fifa2008 would be realistically in 3 years. They just can't do that since it would alienate probably 95% of the community who couldn't afford $3000+ systems

Well to get the ref and linesman to appear on the PC version you have to edit the ini file or install the ref patch, but for the console you can't do this...another bad bug by EA.
yeah, but there really isn't any justification for this. Even if they wanted to save specs or whatever, they cannot remove refferee's!! It's like removing helmets in EA's NFL.. Or removing the net from FIFA..

The justification is easy, either keep the ref/linesman variable enabled and expect thousands of customer support calls and forum complaints about how slow the game chops in certain situations or all the time. Or simply remove them, increase frames per second/less overhead/smoother overall play.
It's a no brainer at least on a development standpoint.

you are missing the point. And im not here to start a feud or what-not, but I'm sure they could've removed something else.. This is a major thing. It's a big part of soccer to have the refferee there, and when you don't, it feels like playing something else. I don't want to hear ill-faded justifications from a developers point of view.. afterall, we're handing the cash for this.
I hear you Denis... its an unfortunate thing that the extra models for the refs alone are a significant impact on processing and/or rendering overhead. Just remember that games like NHL, NBA Live and Madden don't feature so many models on the screen at one time like Fifa does, so in other words Fifa is a hard game to find that balance between performance and extras.

lol, I didnt even notice that there wasnt any refs on the field during play, but then again I dont really care about those kinda things...
the main problem is that they develop with the ps2 as the base console.. and then try to upgrade for pc and xbox.. instead of using the xbox as the base platform.. look at the jump in quality on graphics on espn nfl 2k5 when they moved to xbox as their development version..
