I believe that Mexico and the USA also have automatic spots. That's unless Honduras or Jamaica go well. Honduras and Jamaica to Mexico and USA is the equivalent to NZ to Australia.

What I meant to say was that Mexico has basically as much chance of missing out on the world cup than Australia does with direct qualification.

Bear in mind that South America is the ONLY Confederation where more than the top 3 from the Final Competition go through to the World Cup!!!

Oceania is a confederation... FIFA made us a Confederation... and we're the only Confederation which doesn't get a WC place... but that is about to change... from 2006 onwards... Oceania WILL get Direct Qualification to the World Cup... and if you don't like it...
We may not score 31 goals against an island where the main export is coconuts BUT if we played Australia in Buenos Aires WE'D KICK YOUR SORRY A$$ES. Bottom line is it doesn't matter how many goals you score, it's beating QUALITY opposition which matters!
I won't be shocked if Oceania gets there automatic spot, but it isn't deserved. Let them join the AFC and have them lose to Korea or Japan. After all, I ain't really interested in seeing those socceroos in the WC, they honestly don't deserve it and I honestly enjoyed the reaction from the bars in Australia when the people were crying there eyes off. They were so convinced they were in the WC and in Centenario you got a taste of reality for the 3RD time

I think that 8 countries should play for the 2 lasts spots in the WC(the extra spot and the spot disputed by the 5th in Conmebol and the champion of Oceania). These countries should be:
-5th from Conmebol
-4th from Concacaf
-6th from Africa
-3 more European countries
-Oceania champion
-4th from Asia
2 of these 8 would go to the WC. The rest of the spots should stay as they are right now.
And to the guys who said that Costa Rica shouldn't be in the WC, don't forget that they were eliminated by the 3rd place of the WC with the same number os points.

Of course Oceania don't merit an automatic place. There is only one serious team in that continent and they will win the Oceania section for the foreseeable future.

Well said, I agree completely. It's a shame Jono82 is a little TOO SLOW to understand everyone disagrees with an automatic spot for Oceania.
As for Jono82 and Farina's comments that Australia would have won Group A in the World cup.
. Sure with the great perfomances displayed against Uruguay in the Centenario they really looked like a team to roll over every team in the world cup. Let´s face it. Australia national team sucks. Anyone trying to compare the crap australian team whith ANY WC champions is at least stupid.
