They got way too much help from referees, and Shearer in particular seemed to be able to direct the Referees to do his bidding. I've seen him commit a foul and then be awarded the free-kick after a discussion with the Ref. I am consoled by the fact that he will always be remembered as the Manager in charge when the Toon got relegated. (Doesn't matter that there was not much he could have done about it.)
