Ekelund, Kick off was the first ever football game I played. Have you tried Ultimate Soccer Manager 98?

My first football game was "Soccer 2" to the commodore 64. At that time it was just great. However I still rate Kick Off 2 as one of the best football games ever when it comes to gameplay. Remember the insane ref S. Sreech in Kick Off that handed out red cards like he was in a card game. It is actually that guy that has made PM...hehe

I have been a football manager fan ever since I got to play Football Manager 1 on the commodore 64, do you remember that game? I believe every player had to values: skill and fitness... lol
Very advanced, NOT!

I give every manager game a chance and I agree that the business part of USM98 was great. As I remember USM98 was very detailed when it comes to business. You could buy restaurants, burger stands, hotels, expand stadium etc. right? Well correct me if Im wrong but I believe that you could in fact set the price of a burger, lol. This is a feature both CM and in PM should copy. :rockman:

that is SOOO what managers around the world spend their time doing

cm is a MANAGERIAL game, you take the role of a manager; and not of a guy running a hotdog stand outside of the game :|

btw, 3d matchengine, restaurants, burger stands............ and you say that they're hardcore managerial games :kader:

Some people like to manage the finances and some dont. It would be an idea to make the option open like in TCM where you can hire a business manager if you don't like the smoke in the hot dog stand :p

If the subject is realism there are many issues we could attack, also in CM. The most important thing in the life of a manager is observing your players in action. Have anyone ever heard of a manager that never sees his team play on the pitch? That is SOOO unrealistic. Text based matches is a sorry excuse. Its like reading about a football match in the newspaper vs seing it with your own eyes. The only reason why CM and other well known manager games haven't made 3D engines yet is because it is very difficult. It requires lots of computer resources to manage the graphics. When the resources already are tied up in numerical calculations it leaves little room to handle the graphical part of the game.

I hope the 2D view is better in the final version of CM4 than the demo, because that wasn't too impressive. Especially not when you just have gotten used to Player Manager 2003 match engine.

Well since CM01/02 crashed and destroyed my save game, i've kinda had a slight distain for the game, so i've tried to find something to replace it.

I played Alex Ferguson's player manager 2003 a couple of weeks ago. I must admit, after watching a couple of ugly, unrealistic matches and spending an hour or two messing with my wildly outdated and innacurate team, i deleted it from my hard drive and didn't even bother to burn it to cd.

Sorry to bring up warez, but i am SO glad i didn't actually pay for this game, in my opinion it is awful. Far worse than TCM2003, and that's really saying something.

And yes, i caved.. i'm playing CM01/02 again.. really can't wait until the 28th, CM4 is going to ruin my life.. in a good way of course.

PS Liam, remember me from last year? Looks like you're one of the main men round here now, congrats!

I also played the first version of Player Manager 2003 and I can only agree with you. There were some bugs that pissed me off. It looked like it was released before they had tested it. However since the latest 1.3e patch its working fine.
Of course its pretty awfull to look at when your defense screws up because they lack talent, but you can hardly blame the creator of the game for that one.

As I said before, the things outside the pitch is not as detailed as CM so I you are the kind of guy that needs 100% acurate team updates, 30 active leagues, 100% real UEFA/FIFA rules, then stick to CM. If you love seing football with your own eyes then give PM a try. A matter of temperament. Dont worry, it will only bite you.

yeah, gotta admit, i'm a total stathead and I love the game to be ultra realistic, and CM is as realistic as you can get.. imagine my surprise to find that my neighbour's 16 year old friend who plays in the reserves for Havant & Waterlooville was in the game.. now that's detail!

However, I loved Player Manager 99 on the PSX, (i think it was the George Graham) one, despite it being way too easy.. i mean having a striker score 150 goals in one season is a little silly, but the essence of the game was a lot of fun. I just don't feel that way in Player Manager 02 and 03, the magic has been lost somewhere (in my opinion only of course).

Although I like the ultra-realism of Championship Manager, I'm not 100% looking forward to the transfer restrictions on CM4, as transferring players and hearing news of big transfers at other clubs is my favourite part of the CM series. i think in some cases it would be nice if you could turn some of the fifa regulations on or off to suite yourself, also for instance those f**king work permits!!

I'm always willing to give other manager games a go, but like many people here have said, nothing really seems to compare to Championship Manager, and I always find myself going, oh.. you can't do this, oh you can't do that, and getting annoyed that it's not as functional as Championship Manager.

I would like to try the Sky Sports soccer manager game, and "Four Four Two" the ITV sport football manager game, and maybe even one of these "official" football manager games which seem to be coming out for every premier league club (except Man Utd so far) but these aren't really games I want to go and spend money on, because deep down I know they aren't going to cut it against CM01/02, and soon CM4.

TROD, i used to be fairly busy on here (fifa2003/champ man forums) back when Fifa 2003 was new out, but i stopped using the net for ages, choosing instead to go out places and stuff, but CM4 is out soon, so that's all gonna stop and i will become a computer and internet junkie once more hehe.

Actually i believe i used to have about the same number of posts as Liam back then.. you've been quite busy haven't you mate?

PS: CF88, sorry about mentioning warez before, i made sure i was as non descript as i could be, and rest assured, nothing short of every game shop in town being destroyed by iraqi missiles will stop me from PAYING for CM4 next Friday.

Feels good to be back :D

Anyway, I think this thread has just about gone as far as it's gonna go. If you want to compare CM to other games in the future, or talk about comparisons, please start a new thread :)

Thanks :)
