Why did Zidane leave Juventus in 2001 to join Real Madrid?

I remember seeing an interview , I think he said he needed a new challenge and felt that he wasnt playing at his best at Juventus . Im sure money had a lot to do with it as well.

I truly don't think Zizou is one of those money-grabbing players like Figo, Ronaldo, etc. at Real Madrid. When he said he wanted a new challenge in La Liga and wanted to live in Spain, I really do think he was being honest.

One request though:

Please don't turn this into a Zinedine Zidane bashing thread. He's done far too much and is far too classy to deserve that.

If I remember correctly, his wife had been nagging for years that she wanted to leave Turin.

Frankly, I was surprised he was still there his last year. And remember, for all his brilliance, Zizou had a couple of not so good years with Juve. And the money we got for him freed up some of the cash to make some of the best transfers Moggi has done.
