why didn't holland qualify

it's a shame holland didn't qualify for the world cup this year but can somebody please tell me how this happened
I mean they ranked third or fourth place in Euro 2000 for crying out loud

Let me tell you why.... because on qualifying they were at the same group of Ireland (that qualified 2nd place) and Portugal (qualified 1st place) that also ranked 3rd on Euro2000!

They have an excellent team but this qualifying was to tough and someone had to stay home!

I think Ypx is not interested in the fact holland had short of points.
He wants to know how on earth we were weaker as Ireland and Portugal, both lower on the FIFA-rating as Holland.
So he correctly asumed there was another reason.

Wel, the reason was a mix of events.
1. We met Ireland in the 1st match on the moment the competition was not on full flow yet, with some topplayers out of form. Ireland was the surprise-package of the group and Germany and Spain found out at the World Cup how difficult to beat they are.

2. Van Gaal made the mistake to train too intense when the team was together and after van Gaal was fired, the players complained about that as the reason they were not fit in all matches.

3. The suspension of Frank de Boer and Davids (incorrect, as the FIFA admitted lately) made us miss some key-players.

4. Because the three points above we came in the position to win away from portugal and Ireland, which prooved to be too much...


BUT... we will be back in Euro 2004

Both lower on Fifa rating?

As far as I know since 1999 that Portugal is ahead Holland in Fifa Rankings, and since July 2000 Portugal ranks Top10 and besides that since March2001 we´ve been on the Top 5 regularly! But due to our disapointing WC we´ll loose some places!

But the reasons why Holland is not on WC has nothing to do with rankings!

You are right, my mistake about that ranking.
You are also right it has nothing to do with the rankings, as I already pointed out in the remaining of my last post

I don't think that Holland was the only loss to this WC either....teams like Romania, Czech Rep., Norway, Scotland, Ukraine, etc would have also added to the quality of this world cup....

Hmm, I think the criteria should be having the best teams possible, whether they're from South-America or Asia. FIFA will start doing this with the refs in the next WC.
Well, I agree that there are already a lot of european teams, but look at this stat: from the 16 teams that qualified to the 2nd round, 9 were european!
