why do players fail?

when they move to another league, when they switch clubs even in the same country (Torres), when they go mediocre after scoring 20 goals the previous season? and the other way round, when they're average and just explode at some point? I'm talking about cases like Shevchenko, Kezman, Quaresma, Veron, Kleberson, Luque, Seedorf and R. Carlos at Inter, Emre, Diego, Mendieta at Lazio, etc.

Quaresma I know the answer to. The others are a bit more complicated.

It's a lot at once, and other times it's a single reason, really. Take Kezman for example; the Dutch league isn't exactly complicated for a striker, and he had a great team in PSV. He still had a great team in Chelsea, but the league and defenders were completely different, maybe the support he was getting from the teammates was different as well. Plus there's the change of settings, weather, far away from the family, all that.

Even Sheva, who was INSANE at Milan. There's no arguing both Milan and Chelsea were great teams, but perhaps he swapped for the wrong reasons? Maybe the style of play didn't suit him?

On Quaresma though, it's just because he's ****.

Torres and Sheva because they were bought by the chairman and not the manager, and didn't suit the system. The system is being reworked for Torres (and because it needs to anyway), but I think the biggest factor is the player playing in a new system, in a new league, with new players, which could suit you more and it could suit you less.

There's also mental issues, but generally, it's tactics.

It's too early to say Torres flop in Chelsea, i'm still confident he will be back in shape and will succes there.

me too, he's just 27 (hopefully not next week).

I think there are 4 major factors:

1- Motivation (Hungriness for more success, which make them work as hard as before)
2- Physical Fitness
3- Mental Toughness (Confidence)
4- Tactical stability

The thing with Torres, which people seem to forget is that he hasn't been in form for a long time. the last full season at liverpool he was injured a lot and then the last injury he still hasn't seem to have performed since. he was non-existent at the world-cup, he's scored 10 goals in his last 41 league appearences. Admitedly for Chelsea it is 1 in 18 league appearences. but his form hasn't been there since pre-World Cup. Maybe he would have found it quicker at Liverpool or not at all. but it will take longer adapting to a new team at Chelsea.

Sheva was already on the decline before he left Milan.
Though stats may not show it, his sharpness was dropping, and his performances were generally less impressive.

Also, Milan's medical lab is renowned for being one of the best, and most accurate in the world.
Perhaps they saw what Chelsea didn't?
