I am running win XP pro with an nvidea GeoForce3 ti 200 video card and 1 gig of ram. I bought the game because of the rave reviews everywhere and I keep getting this error when I try to load the program.

initmem - INSUFFUCUENT MEMORY TO CONTINUE
FILE win\initmem.c LINE 246

My system drivers are 100% updated.
Can anyone help me out there.

Galah,

I am going to try to get windows 98 installed on the same system. A dual boot thing. I actually had to reinstall my system last night cause a partition thing went wrong. I'm gonna try it again today. I am playing World Cup 98 because of the reviews of Nike ( I think we are alike in our views.) But let me ask you. This is alot of trouble for one game. If I cannot get it to work what would be your suggestion on another soccer game that will have a better chance of working with XP?

Thanks.

Ahhhhhh!!!!!!

I just typed an entire message explaining the pros and cons of each game, hit submit and lost the lot. It wanted my to login again.

So he's a ranking of the games based on my centimental thoughts.

1. Fifa 98 RTWC - Best sports game of its time. Full world cup qualifying for every registered Fifa nation (even the small pacific nations like Solomon Islands). Had intro movies, full comentary, post goal effects, real crowd chants, dynamic pitch wear, wheather effects, real international stadiums. It was awesome and lasted me well into the year 2000. Best graphic effects require a 3dfx Voodoo card.

2. Fifa 2000 - Excellant, fun and a very playable 'game' not a simulation like most modern versions. Will run smoothly on any Pentium that has a 3D Graphics card. Works with WinXP

3. Fifa 2003 - Very realistic

4. Fifa 2001 - Good like 2000 just required more computer grunt

5. Fifa 99 - Plays like 98, just with a heap less tournamnets.

6. Fifa 2002 WC - Good atmosphere effects. Gameplay not the best

7. Fifa 2002 - What was EA thinking. Players movements are not fluent.

8. Fifa 98 WC - Why pay money for a game that has less features, less tornaments, no league games and no indoor soccer when compared to RTWC. Beats me, cause I didn't!

I just had to reinstall my system for the third time. While it was reformatting I went to my local store and bought FIFA 2003 for $20 american. It's a good deal. It normally goes for double that. I'll try that and put together a PC for the other RTWC 98. I have some spare parts.

Here's a question Galah, Are FIFA 99 and RTWC 98 identical except for the tournaments? And if 99 works on XP with one gig of ram I just might get it.

Thanks again.

well I can say that aslthough Fifa99 and 98 are similar, they are not identical. Personally I prefer parts of fifa98 :- like the indoor pitch and RTWC mode, but I find the range of passing much bettr of fifa99. I.e Fifa98 did not have the cross field ball option, whereas fifa99 does.

sorry mate....

back to the 1 gig problem. I have not found a way around it. My friend is going to try and disable some of his ram using some software application or through some system file modifications. I'll report back the findings of this.

MTM,

I have found no solution. I tried partitioning my HD so I could have a dual boot thing going. (I am sure someone with more experience then me with that could do it, but I gave up.) My brother uses win2000 and it installed fine (well it had the "cannot detect hardware" error, but it installed anyway.) It played great also. He has 256 RAM. I contenplated taking out a chip and going down to 512 RAM, but I nixed it and just went and got FIFA 2003. (Which looks great and I cannot compete in the game, but it's fun. I'll get better.) I can build a PC specifically for FIFA 98 soon.

Now, in my MANY hours searching the internet for a solution, I could find nothing that helped. I did read of a guy who had XP and the game worked fine, then he upgraded to a gig of ram and then it didn't. (Same error I had.) It seems to be just the gig thing. There are no patches for it. :(

I am not sure if it is just XP with the gig problem. I am also not sure if win98 will run the game with a gig of RAM. I almost installed win98, but I like XP and I had already did 3 reinstallations and I just wanted to play a frieking game of soccer. :) So it's 2003 for me until I get my friend to do the dual boot thing (which I am not positive will work) or I build PC.

Wish I had better news for you though. I am contenplating fifa99. It's good that I live near a store and can get these games used and cheap. FIFA 98 RTWC was only $4.99. :)

Good luck.

PS I wanna meet the guy who RETURNED FIFA 98 RTWC...wait no I don't.

when you guys talk about building a new pc for rtwc98, how much do you think that would cost. seems like a long way to play a game which really isn't that brilliant. then again i'm building a patch from start for fifa 99 (hint hint pay intrest)

Hint recieved. I have alot of spare PC parts. In a few months I am moving and I'll have a PC (play room) room and I will have one or two (or three) PC's in there. One will have win 98 and on that will be FIFA 98 RTWC. I won't really be buying anything new. I am running 2003 and it is fantastic. I keep getting my butt kicked. I played 12 games so far and won only 2. Fun though.

Got it to Work

I got Fifa98 RTWC to work on a:

Pentium 4 with 1.5GB of RAM
Windows XP Service Pack 1

I updated it with the official 1.3 pack from EA
and the DISABLED virtual memory. (This did the trick)

Even though it works it runs really slllloooowww!!!

Will try and fix the new prob then report back.

Chow!!!

Of course, that's it!!!!

Alright, FIFA 98 RTWC has a memory allocation over load if your system has too much RAM, too much SWAP FILE or a combination of both. This problem is most prone on Windows XP systems.

So for systems with a heap of RAM (over 512MB) you will need to minimise your SWAP file if you want the game to load. Do this by: (WinXP)

1. Control Panel
2. System
3. Advanced tab
4. Performance - Settings
5. Advanced tab
6. Virtual Memory - Change
7. Choose No Virtual Memory (not recommended) or
7a. Custom Size (recommended)
7b. Enter 200 for INITIAL and MAX
7c. Click on Set
7d. Then OK.
8. You will most likely be told to restart your computer. Do it!

Now, make sure you have Version 1.30 patch installed (D3D users) or Version 1.40 (3dfx voodoo users).

1.30 - Load the game using the nVidia shortcut. It has a -D3D command that activates Direct3D acceleration. Otherwise you will play the game in Software mode :(
1.40 - load the game using the VoodooII shortcut

now because Fifa98 does not have a 3DSetup utility like newer Fifa's, it bases its settings of the desktop resolution. So if you want the game to run at a proper pace, you will have to set your desktop colour depth to 16bit colour. You can choose whatever resolution your system can handle. 1024x768 looks impressive.

Finally, some sound problems can be resolved by running the game in Windows 95 compatability mode.

Enjoy!!!

(Wow thats right, the dynamic pitch wear is actually based on the amount of possession a side has and how much the players run up and down the pitch. Why did this disappear from future games. This game rocks still. I might become addicted again. Especially to indoor soccer!!!)

Hummm

Running in Windows 95 compatability mode on some sytems causes the game to run really slow (again).

For best game play have compatability mode disabled, with 16bit colour.

(Control Panel, Display, Settings, Color Quality)

wow, once again you have impressed me Galah. Altho I can't vouch for this info, I know from past experience that the information provided is normally 1st class

Wow!
Great info Galah!

But can you actually play the game in a better resolution than 800x600?

That's what I have managed to get at most...

Was that with the 1.30 D3D-patch or the 1.40 Voodoo2-patch?

galah

Youth Team
no

I have not been able to play Fifa98 above 800x600.

The 1.30 patch allows DirectX's Direct3D acceleration and makes the AI play better. D3D uses the power of your graphics card to draw faster and better looking screen graphics. Otherwise the game plays in software mode.

The 1.40 patch allows 3dfx Voodoo2 (Glide3x) acceleration whilst also fixing the AI's ability.

That was just what I thought...
Thanks for your answer.

However, I kind of like the gameplay of the original version, do you know anyway to make it possible to play the game in non-software mode and the original gameplay if you have a voodoo2 or GeForce4 MX-card?

Playing the game without the voodoo2 fix on this configuration makes the game freeze at half time. And if I install 1.3 or 1.4 I get the new game play (that I don't want)... Any suggestions?
