Well the purpose of the post was to spark
some controversy. Yes, many of the players
are from Brazil and Holland. Who would you
replace in that lineup and why ?

Raoul, firstly I would turn your ten man squad into an eleven one, that's how soccer squads are made up these days, but perhaps you thought your ten can beat any eleven ? Where on earth is Petit ? Your team wil concede many a goal, only Stam is a real defender, although Davids in midfield is also very good.

Pity - thanks for pointing out what
was obviously my attempt to see if anyone
was paying attention ;-)

Zidane is my fourth guy in the middle.

As for my back four conceding many a goal -
you're probably right. There would be many
goals scored on both ends. Just the way I like it.

My line up:

GK: E. van der Sar [HOL]
DEF:J. Stam [HOL]
DEF:L. Thuram [FRA]
DEF:S. Hyppia [FIN] (keep an eye on him, he is now playing
for Liverpool)
DEF:P. Maldini [ITA]
MID:E. Davids [HOL]
MID:P. Cocu [HOL]
MID:Z. Zidane [FRA]
F: M. Overmars [HOL]
F: R. van Nistelrooy [HOL]
F: Ronaldo [BRA]

Yes no Bergkamp, he is too weak, always thinking
never doing, that's why I prefer van Nistelrooy.
A bit young but he will even outclass van Basten
in the near future.

Question:
Why does everyone think that Schmeigel is so great?
In my opinion, he cannot play soccer, he always
hits a ball into the crowds.

Though nearing the end of a brilliant career, Peter Schmeichel should be considered as one the best keepers of his time. His success at United and Denmark speaks for itself. If you want a recent example, take a look at last years FA Cup Semi-Final vs Arsenal when he stopped a Dennis Bergkamp penalty with two minutes left. That save was
the difference between United winning the treble. He was United's lone shining star
in Barcelona during the Champions League final, in a game that Bayern should have
won decisively. If I had my choice today, I would go with Van Der Saar, but if he got injured, I would send Schmeichel in.

Cartman: For a guy that can't play soccer he sure has achieved a lot in his career hasn't he ? Given, it is your opinion, but I think saying that he can't play soccer is pathetic. If you gave a real reason then I could understand, but he always hits a ball into the crowds ain't good enough.
Why do I think he's good ? His presence, especially when faced with one on one situations. He's got a commanding presence in goal, he's fierce when attacking the ball, he's brave when sliding into saves or jumping for them, he's a terrific shot stopper, he's got great agility for such a big man. I've seen him play many a times ( only on TV though ) and just like every other human player out there he's made mistakes, but the times he's saved man utd's bacon far exceeds the few mistakes he's made. Man utd will miss him.
And just in case you wondered, no I'm not a man utd fan.

What I ment was:
He is a bit insecure if a ball is passed back
to him.
If you look at van der Sar (with one 'a'
he is the best keeper in one on one situations.
Always calm, always expecting the unexpected.
I agree that Schmeigel is one of, if not the. best goal-
keeper in the world.
I just ment that he was/is not calm.
If I may, you can compare him with Hans van Breukelen.
One of the best goalkeepers Holland's ever had.
But he sucked bigtime in ballcontrol.
I think nowadays it's necessary that a keeper can handle a ball.
Schmeigel is also not good in what we call 'game resuming'.
If van der Sar catches or saves a ball, he almost
immediatly throws or kick the ball to a attacker
so that a counterattack is imminent.
Many goals have been scored due through fast game resuming.
I hope you understand my opinion now

Firstly an apology to all who reads this as this is not about the world eleven but rather bout a difference in opinions.
Cartman - I'm sorry but I can't agree with you there. Schmeichel , according to me, has the longest goalkick in England, he can take play up to the opponents penalty area with his goalkicks, and he's got a very strong throwing arm as well. With strong forwards like Cole, Yorke and sherringham kicks like those are extremely dangerous and can been seen as a great means of counter attacking. He's definitely not insecure when a backpass is given, he deals with it as 99% of goalies would do and that is put it up in the air out of an attackers reach. I know Van der Sar makes it look a lot nicer when he gets the ball by playing that smooth midfield passing game, but is that always effective ? I think it puts his defenders under pressure as a small mistake on their side can result in turnover ball near the box. I also think that's why Holland has not been as succesfull as they could be. Apart from Stam, De boer and Bogarde the other defenders are rather weakish. Winter, Reiziger and Numan are all pretty plain when attempting to counter attack.
My top 5 goalies are - Schmeichel, Van der Sar, Seaman, Campos ( for pure entertainment value ) and Nigel Martyn

In reply:
The Dutch national team does not have great
defenders because they do not play defensive.
Attacking is is the game they play.
Therefor Stam, De Boer and Bogarde are more
then enough to defend.
And as for Reiziger, he is a defender of the
attacking kind, as are many in Holland.
