After reading and while replying to the cheat team thread i came up with this... idea.

OK the first few lines with the players are comming from my post there about what players that exist in the game by default could be concidered as "cheat players" due to their cost/ability/ease_of_transfer.

""freddy Grisales, Sebatian Saja. World class in the game, just good in reality

Mokoena Becomes World class, doubt he'll be even close to being good in the real thing

Schmeichel. Soli (not sure about him)

The word cheat doesnt seem very "correct" tho. Its not a cheat when you dont do anything to hack the way the application works."" (*this is where this thread post starts from*)

Actualy there should be players like that, but in a different way, players that just like in real life without anyone believing they have a future or potential, suddenly make this "bang" durring a season and become great players that teams want to buy imediately after being impressed by their performance, even if these players are not very young (sometimes players just change their approach, in trainning, life, after maybe something that happened to them(reminds me of David Coulthard's different approach to life in general after his airplane accident, not that he got real better, but then again DC was already too old to realy improve. 30+)).

So that would mean the game changing their potential and/or current abillity above their, untill then mediocre potential. Now that would be realism .Ok, we cant preddict who will this be in reality, but it cerainly would make things more real in the game(and with regens, it wont be like with real players we know are bad and start looking too good in all of a sudden, as regens... they dont realy exist).

Also this would add plenty of good players in the game after a few seasons, since FM that seriously lacks good players after a few seasons has a problem with that. Just try reaching ~2010-11 and you'll know what i mean. Just an idea that we could might let SI know about (eps if we had someone who could contact them in a more dirrect way) so they could start working on this to implement in a future release of the game.

Unless this is old news and they have something like that in mind already that is....

that is exactly what i have been thinking the past few days!

i'd also like to see more of players emerging as decent players in the lower leagues and being bought up by premiership sides, this doesn't really happen that much at all.

yeah, very rarely does that happen in the latest releases, yet i remember in CM 01/02 it happening quite often, with Danny Scofield from huddersfield town always being bought by the big clubs (H)

Great post Alex, I reckon it's a good example of the Porto team, after their Triumph in the UCL, Many Clubs wanted their key players, for eg, Carvalho, Deco, Cosinha, Maniche etc.

yeah, only from the way i think of it, it should be more like one general value that defines how rarely this happens in the database, per season for example, and one more, maybe, that would define how much likely it is to happen to players of some certain nationality (100% - 50% etc)

You could kind of argue that this is kind of already in the game. A player such as Deco, like Surfy mentioned previously, will have had alot expected of him, which would in-game be a high potential rating, which other managers might no be able to identify until they have actually done something worthwile, they're current ability. Altho i do understand what you are saying, however maybe taking a new approach to things only increases the rate at which the current ability develops? If Joe Bloggs down the road has never been able to kick a ball, and has bad co-ordinations, its going to take a hell of a change in his approach to make him a star.

I dont no, maybe i've just confused myself in that post :(

I thikn what u say is partialy correct, but then again, think of this, how many players that in the prev release of FM/CM looked ****e and in the next one, simply because they had an awesome season have suddenly become gr8 (or have been given huge potential). We cant realy predict potential, we can only assume, and also some players manage to surpass their true "potential" and become even better from what they could actualy be (few athletes names come to mind...) So this would add realism to the game, and also like i have already mentioned would add a lot more good players after a few seasons in the game (or to be more exact, wouldnt make the lack of good players after a few seasons appear as much as it does now)

yeah exactly. I mean there are players who could be a hit or a flop, and for these they could add something meaning they start off poor, and then after a few seasons their potential rises or stays the same. I get you now. So it would be a completely random process.

i think this is a great idea, having some kind of randomness amongst how certain players can suddenly improve via certain criteria is a really good idea.

E.g. im guessing you mean stuff like when Diouf suddenly exploded in WC2002 and everyone wanted him, or when that youth player plays in the first team for the first time and scores a goal on his debut, stuff like this, "indicators" lets say should have some kind of thing that enables there to be a chance of improvement.

Hard to implement but a great idea.

Actualy, well first of all, i dont know how to build a game, but with my little experience from programing and SQL databases (SQL server, Oracle PL/SQL), but mainly from my SQL experience, its not hard to add this in a database and make it randomise another value based on a mathematic algorithm.. They built the game, im prety sure they (SI) can add this without much trouble as they will have to deal (based on logic just i say that, idont have any source code obviously to know that actualy) with just a small part of the database without having to re-arange all of the code, or huge parts of it

"Nick says:
tom, did you read my 1st post as regards to the dynamic potential?
Tom says:
yeah
Tom says:
read em all
Nick says:
cos you could kinda of argue
Nick says:
that a player always has a potential
Nick says:
wether it be known or not
Tom says:
eh
Nick says:
its just how much this develops
Nick says:
which is kinda of the potential and current ability implemented in FM
Tom says:
i agree, i think potential IS already implemented, but it could change due to certain events
Tom says:
no?
Tom says:
e.g. a normal youth player might have potential 160, but a brief fling at fame might push his ambition, leading it to 180
Tom says:
no?
Nick says:
i dont no, thats the thing
Nick says:
does it actually change
Nick says:
his ambition can't change his potential
Nick says:
just his current?
Tom says:
why not? i mean i know it doesnt, but in my opnion it should. If i was stuck in the lower leagues all my life id have the same current but a low potential, but if i was to play an FA cup match against a big team where i made a splash, that might 'encourage' me to get better, hence increasing my 'potential'
Tom says:
rthats why i like what alex's said
Nick says:
i like it, but i just dont no if its realistic or not
Nick says:
let me give you an example
Nick says:
as someone said diouf
Tom says:
k
Nick says:
he will have always had this potential, something that made him stand out from the rest
Nick says:
the chance to be a great player
Nick says:
no one knew of this, and he was just your average player, which is your current abililty
Nick says:
he then plays at the world cup, increasing his ambition, which then increases his current ability
Nick says:
his potential is then recognised, causing the hype
Tom says:
so you think, certain 'events' should vastily improve the current, not the potential?
Nick says:
thats the thing, i'm not sure
Tom says:
cos his potential can never change
Tom says:
hmm
Nick says:
i think thats maybe what i'm saying
Tom says:
see... i dont know, i just reckon ambition has a lot to do with it
Tom says:
do you know what i mean?
Nick says:
yeah
Tom says:
maybe that can actually CHANGE a persons outlook on football itself
Nick says:
but i think maybe that a players potential is always there
Tom says:
aye possibly"

This is a conversation between me and Tom, if you have time to read it please do and add your input. If i get time tomorrow i'll write it as a paragraph with both sides of the arguement.

My point is that we can never rate someones potential. So if this what i say is added we can add some extra randomness, durring play, this could done in a simple way by adding something like the values i mentioned, or based on some certain events. Its like a way of the game saying while you play "Hey the database researcer didnt get me right, this thing happened after couple of seasons and i managed to get my true ability out, the scouter could have never known that(esp since it only happens in a simulation of my playing career)"

yea...I would like to see Roman Abramovich suddenly go bankrupt :D

also if this works the other way, like Steven Gerrard suddenly turns crap for example, would that be called Dynamic Potential Disability?

....sorry, I was bored.

Reserve Team
I think SI may be leaning towards this. In NHL EHM, the young prospects are assigned potentials -1 to -15.

-1 Potential will be between 1-20 (the worst young players, they will likely retire at a young age and keep getting recycled back into the regen pool)
-2 Potential will be between 10-40
-3 Potential will be between 30-60
-4 Potential will be between 50-80
-5 Potential will be between 70-100
-6 Potential will be between 90-120
-7 Potential will be between 110-140 (quite rare – a good prospect with a decent chance of being a regular NHL player)
-8 Potential will be between 130-160 (rare – a top prospect with a good chance of being a talented NHL player)
-9 Potential will be between 150-180 (very rare – a top 10 prospect who is considered a can’t miss NHL talent)
-10 Potential will be between 170-200 (extremely rare – the top player available in a draft, but not every year)
-11 Potential will be between 20-80 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-12 Potential will be between 40-100 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-13 Potential will be between 60-130 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-14 Potential will be between 90-160 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-15 Potential will be between 110-190 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)

If SI can implement this into FM, it would really be great.

You can rate someones potential, so isn't that why they have random potentials? And surely a players potential wouldn't decrease, they current just wouldn't increase as much.

Dont get me wrong, i'm not against your idea, i was thinking along the same lines myself the other week, its just i'm trying to understand it properly by throwing in different ideas :D
