Well, as you all know by now, the new GTA is not going to be supported by PC anymore. That's why i'm finally forced to buy one of the platforms and i also need to find something to spend some of the evenings in the summer while on a work term. So any suggestions on what you guys prefer and why?

GTA4 is coming out on the PC, it's going to be released about 6 months after the 360/PS3 versions like the other GTA's were.

I'll be getting it for my 360, and then probably get the PC one anyway later on!

hardware wise they are pretty identical.
If anything the Xbox has a slightly more advanced GPU while the PS3 has a better floating point mathematical precision performing CPU.
oh, and it can play hd movies.

Other arguments are for fanboys and don't really interest me :p

Depends if you want to pay extra for the blueray player.

Also related to that is the possible capacities of games on each console. X360 games will forever be restricted to the size of a DVD while PS3 games are on BluRay, making them theoretically six times bigger.

I just got a PS3 about a month ago and I absolutely love it. I thought back and forth between a Xbox360 and a PS3, but after some research I decided to stick with sony (I already had a PS2 for like 5 years with no issues).

I think right now the Xbox360 actually has a better library of games, but you have to remember that it's also had a year head start. The PS3 should catch up this year though as there's lots of great games due to come out (LittleBigPlanet for one, which looks just mind-blowing). The other thing that turned me in the direction of the PS3 was all the hardware failure problems the 360 was having, and apparently is still having according to a lot of owners. So I read in various forums..

Right now I've been playing a lot of Resistance: Fall of Man, which is just awsome. I was never really into shooters, but this game made me a fan, and there's a Resistance 2 coming out in the summer!

The best thing about these next-gen system for me though isn't the gaming, but the fact that you can use them as a media centre, which is actually what I use it for like 80% of the time. It's great to just turn it on and play movies, music, and tv shows straight from the PS3's harddrive. Another reason I went with the PS3 is ofcourse the built in blu-ray player, the Planet Earth series on blu-ray played on an HDTV is something to behold man..

Either way you decide, I'm sure you'll be satisfied, especially if you're planning on using it for more than games.

Thanks for the pointers, the blu ray thing with PS3 is really what makes me want to get it more, but it is also much more expensive. I guess its a one time investment, so its not that bad. And blu ray CD will probably overtake HD soon anyway.

Oh and the fact that GTA 4 is gonna be on PC is news for me. But my 3 year old laptop won't handle that anyway, unfortunately.

What do you use the memory on PS3 for? Like there is 40GB and 80GB system, but what do you really need that much space for. Is PS3 really like a computer, where you can store and save games, pictures, movies on etc.? I thought that all it is, is a player, where you insert a CD and play whatever is on that CD, so what really is the benefit of having more GBs?

I have the 40GB, and you can pretty well use the harddrive for whatever you want man. Saved games ofcourse, but you can also download free game demos, store digital music and movies, photos, anything you can save on a PC you can do the same with a PS3. Right now I have a few UFC events plus the entire second season of The Boondocks and the 6th season of Curb Your Enthusiasm on there. I just boot up the PS3, click on the episode I want and watch on the big screen.

The other neat thing is that you can add an external harddrive if you eventually want more space, or you can run movies and stuff directly from a USB flash drive. It really is just like a PC in a lot of ways.

While we're on the subject, I was reading some PS3 forums this morning and came across this link. I can only imagine that MS will likely come out with an external blu-ray player for the 360 before the end of the year now. Hopefully XBox guys don't miss out on this great format.

I posted this in the Playstation 3 thread ages ago but for your benefit:

I have both a Xbox 360 and a PS3 and if I'm truthful, at the moment, the 360 is superior to the PS3 due to the large catalogue of games and the killer exclusive titles (Bioshock, Halo 3, GoW etc.) it has, as well as the superb Live online service but I believe in the long term, the PS3 will prove to be the better choice.

At the moment there are very few decent games out for the PS3 (GRAW2, RSV6, Resistance: Fall of Man being some of the notable exceptions), certainly no killer exclusive titles that would persuade you to buy one, however, in the next couple of months and in the run up to Christmas expect to see the number of titles increase (I'm looking forward to Call of Duty 4, Gran Turismo: Prologue and Haze). It won't be till 2008 before I feel the PS3 comes into its own, as it'll get the killer exclusive titles it deserves (Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5, LocoRoco, Tekken 6, Final Fantasy XIII, MGS4, LittleBigPlanet to name but a few).

Sony's equivalent to Xbox Live, the Playstation Network (PSN) when compared to Live in terms of content (full games, extra game content etc.) is quite frankly lacklustre with the exception of Gran Turismo HD Concept but Sony appear to be slowly trying to change this by updating the PSN store every week with new demos and full games (Warhawk, an online multiplayer was released for £19.99 last week).

Another thing to consider is that the Xbox 360 is first and foremost a games consoles with some media features, whilst the PS3 is a true digital media hub with its wifi and bluetooth capability 'straight out the box', and built in Blu-Ray player. You can also browse the web and even use a USB keyboard and mouse if you so desire (eventually you'll be able to use blutetooth keyboards and mice). Another bonus is that the hard disk is easily upgradeable to whatever size storage you want, as it's a standard 2.5" drive, so you'll never run out of room for videos/songs/downloaded games etc. Sony's plan to release a digital tuner for the PS3 in 2008, will also mean that you'll be able watch/record TV programmes using the console in the future. The fact that Sony have placed an emphasis on the console being a media hub for the home, is why I feel that it's a better choice in the long term, as the console's features mean that its longevity will be greater than the Xbox 360.

I do agree that the price of the PS3 puts off casual gamers, however, if you think about it, it's not much more than a Xbox 360 Premium with the wireless adapter and (noisy) HD-DVD drive.

The demise of HD-DVD makes the PS3 even more attractive now, as it's one of the cheapest Blu-ray players on the market and it's future proof because of the ability to upgrade the firmware.

I recently upgraded the hard disk on my PS3 to 120GB, as I was starting to run out of space. I now have my entire movie collection on it (80GBs worth) plus about 10 demos, which are each between 500MB and 2GB in size. Also, some of the newer games either require you/give you the option to install game data to reduce load times. Devil May Cry 4 takes up 5GB on it's own!
