Id love to see some of the Napoleonic Era battles brought to the silver screen. The kind of things they can do now are astounding, and the recreation of massive battlefields or whole armadas would be astounding to see on screen. Ive always loved the idea of making a movie about 1805 which looks at both the last day of Nelson and the greatest victory of Napoleon and has like a dual character focus, but that might suck. More non-western ones would be excellent, too, like more from the Soviet or Asian perspectives on war

Waterloo and the The Battle Of Austerlitz are both great Napoleonic war films. Both unique as they used thousands of extras for the battle scenes. I believe i read somewhere the battle of Austerlitz used the most extras in war film history, apparently.

As for the naval aspect have you seen the Hornblower series by any chance?

all quiet on the western front is one of the best movies ever made in my opinion. very emotional way of showing the soldiers on the nazi side and how most of them suffered too, not that they were all ruthless killers.

Though I believe ive only heard of 'Waterloo' ill be on the lookout for both of them.
I had forgotten about hornblower: I thought it was an excellent series, if at times a bit over dramatized (ex. the episode where the one RN captain backstabs his own flotilla for the cause of Irish Nationalism and hornblowe must save the day, but ill take that over Mel Gibson's versions of history anyday). If that was in the books though, i cant really blame them, but it was an excellent series, I thought, that depicted both the thrilling combat and the horrid living conditions on Royal Navy ships. Only problem is there are only 6 episodes out over here. Have you managed to see more??

Master and Commander had great naval battles but overall it was too slow paced. Ive seen it twice and almost fell almost both times (:/)

Can't stand U-571 - the most rediculous example of pathetic Americanising and changing history you will ever see - and a damn dull film into the bargain.

yeah well, like I said I thought it was entertaining (with the shootin' and torpedos and such..) Otherwise, I usually don't look to Hollywood for history lessons anyhow..

i don't like war movies much, they are not realistic and the history is almost always changed there. the best foreign war movies are Apocalypse Now and Schindler's List.

I found it really boring aswell as infuriating :p As a submarine film, I much prefer K-19.

I like "Taeguki", a korean war movie about the korean war between the North and the South. The battle/fighting scenes make u really feel that war is a terrible thing (I think some of the scenes would definitely be edited out if it is shown in North America because it is just too gruesome)... it's one of the highest budgeted korean movies but in comparison to hollywood productions it's just small change..

although this movie lacks in some parts I still do recommend this to anyone that likes war genres

yeah, I actually missed that movie when it was shown here last year but for a lot of people it was even number 1 on their top 10 lists of the year.
