ah, well Casualties of War is at least worth a watching IMO, it's not in the same calibre as AN or FMJ, but definatly a good movie. Deals more with personal moral and conscience issues during war, rather than being an action-type war movie. It's got a usual good performance from Sean Penn, and a really unusual role for Micheal J. Fox

EDIT: Here's a link to a trailer

I love Casualties of War. I saw it with my father like 12 years ago and I haven't seen it since. like 6 months ago we saw it at Wal-Mart for like $6 and we bought it but I haven't seen it yet.

But I the movie is REALLY good with very strong performances (Y)(Y)(Y)

another one... TIGERLAND. has anyone seen it? its from 2000 and it stars Colin Farrell. directed by Joel Schumacher. another great movie and probably Farrell's best performance even though nobody saw it. really recommended (Y)

note: Tigerland is about the Vietnam war because is about the bootcamp to prepare the soldiers for the war but Im pretty sure they dont get to go to Vietnam after all, everything happens in the bootcamp.

The Deer Hunter is very good, but disturbing and very very long. The first half of the movie was unnecessarily longer than it should have been.
The Deer Hunter is a great film, and I really like the length of it, but I do think it is directed very poorly and it is just the quality of the acting and the sheer power of the storyline which make it so good.

The Thin Red Line missing from that list.

A bit too artsy and boring for my taste but a lot of people rate it as the best war film ever, and I'm talking about people in the industry.
I really enjoyed The Thin Red Line, but then, I am known to like boring films :p Still undecided as to whether it will go in the WW2 poll or not, I personally wouldnt rate it as one of the top 10 ww2 films of all time despite the fact it was very good.

We Were Soldiers is a terrible film in my opinion, one of the worst I have ever seen.

I've only seen Platoon and Rambo out of that list.... I got some catching up to do.
You sure have, some of the best films ever made are on that list - AN, FMJ and GMV are all absolute essentials.

Apoc Now is probably the best movie ever made so it has to be my choice, perfect in every way it seemingly captures the uselessness feeling towards the Vietnam war, Coppola's brilliant adaption of "Heart of Darkness" leads into a wonderful movie. Stunning stuff.

First read "Heart of Darkness" and than watched Apocalypse Now. I thought HoD was kinda boring and I didn't really appreciate it until I saw AN.

Great, great movie.

Now watch Hearts of Darkess, it's a documentary about the making of AN made by Coppola's wife, if will make you appreciate the whole thing even more when you see how difficult it was, how devoted Coppola was to it and how much he had staked on it.

I read Heart of Darkness after I had seen the film, and the accompanying docufilm for that matter, and to be honest it didnt really get to me that I hadnt read the book first. I agree that it would perhaps cause you to see the film differently, but I thought the book wouldnt have been nearly as good without having seen the film.

Yeah, I agree with ::shinji::. Casualties of War is definitely my favorite one too from the lists above. It was a great movie showing a woman's dignity must be appreciated.

I hate seeing rapists' cases in the TV ! :s***: Sorry, my emotions are so high on this one. Lots of male people think that sex is the only one they think about every second. :(

Great, great movie.

We read HoD in our first semester at Uni, it was really tough and boring to read, but terms of analytical purposes there's a lot of "stuff" in it. Haven't seen AN yet though...

how come noone thinks more off Platoon? Vietnam-veterans has said the movie is as real as it can get except actually being there.

Platoon is alright, but it seems unrealistic and over the top in every sense, to me. Of course there was some drug use in Vietnam, but I cant believe it was anything like that film suggests, just like I cant believe a feud between two officers would ever escalate so far or that so many troops would take so much pleasure from killing innocents. Makes good points, but not in a realistic or believable fashion.

I expect you will like it alot more on reflection after seeing the film. HoD is the only Conrad book I could remotely get into.
