You can't touch this... :D lol

Rap sucks. You get the occasional good things like Cypress Hill or Public Enemy, but most of it really sucks. No music, no melody, no talent, nothing but some idiot (with more guns than braincells), with a stereotypical attitude talking over some stupid drum track.

flierman. I started playing guitar learning the same way as you did, playing along to Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam and other stuff. Then I got some books to teach myself music theory, how chords are formed, the scales and modes and stuff. Then I bought some Hendrix books (was my hero, still can't do most of the stuff he could), and scoured the Internet for tabs and such. A good band to look for chords and melody are the Beatles, they really had some good music going.

I'm looking to learn some Spanish Guitar now. I've taught myself to play the Blues.

Thanx for the info mate. I've also got a book with over 1000 chords I believe and I've got a book that teaches me how to play guitar. So I'm doing quite nice. Right now the internet is a great source for me. I'll look into the Beatles thing. They used many "normal" major chords right? Btw if you, or anybody else is interested in Silverchair's Ana's Song look at http://home.studenten.net/~mhflierman/anas_song.txt Just tabbed it out :p.

Thats your oppinion,

Listen to a Nas or Tupac CD and they will prove you wrong. Nas has the best lyrics of any genre, according to the grammies. Don't generalize rap, that is like generalizing glam rock, happy rock, soft rock, hard rock, punk rock, death rock etc.....

There are so many types of Rap so please don't generalize. Tupac and Nas almost always have guitar/bass/ and many times brass instruments and back up vocals are better than britney " I'll splooge in yo eye" spears.

True but these days, there's so much crap coming from the rap/soul/r'n'b scene that people who are more into rock develop some anti-rap/soul/r'n'b feeling. Espescially 2pac was great, I don't like the music, but lyrically he was among the best. I don't know about Nas, he might be good, but if he then does this co-stuff with J. Lo he brings himself down.

I don't like that entire Murder Inc/Def Jam record stuff anyway. There's nothing but commercial wannabe's over there. Ja Rule, Ashanti, Fat Joe..... I mean come on.....

I have heard Nas and Tupac. I don't like their stuff. I just don't like rap, all kinds. It doesn't do anything for me, except for the occasional stuff like I said before.

The Beatles did use lots of mainstream chords but it was the way they put them together. In their later stuff they started using more obscure chords to construct their songs.

If you like obscure chords in music then Hendrix used loads. Jazzy chords, classic chords and lots of others.

To be honest though, you don't wanna try and run before you can walk and you seem to have lots of helpful books there. The best resource I've found for getting songs is 'olga'. I have found that their tabs are wrong sometimes but it's usually just a slight variation here and there but it gets you on the right track.

I found it's est to learn to play in the style you like, if you don't like the Beatles, chances are you're not going to enjoy learning to play their stuff.
