This will always remain our national holiday.
However, another VERY important day for Australians is ANZAC day.
It stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps
April 25th it is.
Some argue ANZAC day is more important, and NZ also celebrate this day I believe.
Australia should be a republic by now though. If people understood what they were voting for more, then we should have been after the last referendum. We werent because Australians are afraid of change in my opinion.
Basically it came down to too many Australians wanting a directly elected president. What they didnt understand, is that our president wasnt going to have the same role as the US one. Our PM would still carry out that role, but the President (which was going to be parliament elected), would have been very similar to the Governor General we have now, and DO NOT elect.
Also, having a directly elected President causes problems in our current system of Government. It can mean that the President has to campaign to get in, and the Government and opposition have to campaign to get in and decide the role of PM, but in a seperate election. This means that if the winning campaigns contradict, then you will have all sorts of problems regarding disagreements between the President, and the Prime Minister...
Anyway enough rambling...
Cheers
