Your Nations National Day?

October 28 1835 - The Maori of New Zealand declarewd their independence from the British. Of course this did not sit well with London, so they used war, trickery and disease to decimate the Maori population. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed on February 6 1840, and has been declared as our 'national' day ever since, whilst the Declaration of Independence has been virtually ignored and/ or forgotten.

Yeah, Australia's national holiday, Australia Day, which is marked because its when Captain Cook first landed in Australia in 1788, is January the 26th.

This will always remain our national holiday.
However, another VERY important day for Australians is ANZAC day.
It stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps
April 25th it is.

Some argue ANZAC day is more important, and NZ also celebrate this day I believe.

Australia should be a republic by now though. If people understood what they were voting for more, then we should have been after the last referendum. We werent because Australians are afraid of change in my opinion.

Basically it came down to too many Australians wanting a directly elected president. What they didnt understand, is that our president wasnt going to have the same role as the US one. Our PM would still carry out that role, but the President (which was going to be parliament elected), would have been very similar to the Governor General we have now, and DO NOT elect.

Also, having a directly elected President causes problems in our current system of Government. It can mean that the President has to campaign to get in, and the Government and opposition have to campaign to get in and decide the role of PM, but in a seperate election. This means that if the winning campaigns contradict, then you will have all sorts of problems regarding disagreements between the President, and the Prime Minister...

Anyway enough rambling...

Cheers

yes we also celebrate ANZAC day, in fact over the last 5 years or so it has become more and more popular to commemorate it. I think it is an acknowledgement of a time when New Zealanders and Australians fought AS New Zealanders and Australians, not as some add-on to the brits. So it is remembered as a time when we were able to stand up as nations in our own right, on the battle field at least.

and there are also some here who argue that ANZAC day should be our primary national day. unfortunately most people argue for the wrong reasons, i.e. they want to forget about Waitangi Day because there are many protests involving Maori organisations etc. who argue that the Crown has forfeited the contract of the Treaty. And you know what, I think they have.

(yes!, 2 nil to the Kingz!)

It is suppose to be on the 23rd April, but due to the PC bastards who run this country, you don't really notice. Hopefully with English Nationalism beginning to rise, because of Wales and Scotland's powers being devolved to them and we still having to put up with the celtic cabinet still residing in Whitehall, this will change.

THIS MUST CHANGE!!!!!!!!

Well, we have plenty of national holidays, since we've been collecting them since 1147. :|

I'd say the 25th of April (1974), when we beat the crap out of the fascist regime that ruled us for 50 years!
