Why is a semi in Newcastle and not Brisbane? Scheduling reasons?

They assumed that Australia would top the group and be in the other Semi.

Newcastle holds ~25k, which is probably the most they'd expect from the non-Australian Semi-Final...Newcastle is also only 2 hours drive from Sydney, so it means both teams are nearby for the final - no flying etc.

It all went awry when Australia rested a load of players against Korea, and lost (even though we dominated possession - we conceded a bit of a soft goal, and couldn't get one back).

So now Australia play in the small ground, and there will be the 85k stadium at Sydney, 2/3s empty for the second.

They should have scheduled the second semi final at the Sydney Football Stadium - which is the central Sydney (made for football/rugby) rectangular stadium, which holds about 45k...But they figured it'd be two non-Australian sides, and they'd only get 20-25k anyway, so they'd give a regional centre a chance to have international football.

It was a stupid idea in my eyes...Same with the Third Placed Playoff being in Newcastle. Australia will likely lose to Japan next game, and we'll end up with a half empty stadium for the final, and a packed house at Newcastle of 25k for the third placed playoff....

Sydney Football Stadium would have been ideal - it's an awesome football stadium, is centrally located in Sydney, and has a decent capacity.

who would've thought that Japan's chances of going further rested on Honda's and Shinji's feet...and both missed their penalties.

I would've like if both semis were at ANZ or at least the Socceroos match in Allianz.

They couldn't schedule "the Socceroos match" anywhere - as they didn't know which Semi, if either, the Socceroos would be in...

But I do agree that the second semi should have been at the SFS (Allianz). However, I guess the figured it would be a great chance to take the game to a regional centre, and get a great atmosphere with a packed stadium - assuming Australia topped their group, and the second semi was Korea vs UAE (or more likely Japan, the way it was scheduled).

All that said, with the support both Korea and Japan have in Australia, and particularly as it's a derby, I think they'd have filled the SFS with those two sides anyway.

I don't know why you guys are going over having the SFS as a second stadium in Sydney; for international (confederation) tournament football it's mostly restricted to one city to one stadium. Except for Qatar....

I hope you Aussies win the whole god damn thing! It would be perfect with a Timmy the lord the saviour Cahill goal, no?

By the way, the last match against those towelheads, I really liked the stadium. There was grass behind the goal, and people were just chilling there on a small hill. Never seen anything like that before. And they celebrated like hell! That was nice to see. : )
