But did missing that penalty and falling to his knees diminsh anything he had accomplished, or did afterward?ShiftyPowers said:I remember Roberto Baggio (the best player at 94 and a player with a great career) for blazing the final penalty over the bar, losing the final to Brazil in 1994. And you think Zidane won't be remembered for this headbutt? Come on.
newbie original said:He will be remembered for many things......HEADBUTTING ONE OF HIS OPPONENTS IN THE CINGULAR MOST IMPORTANT GAME ON THE PLANET will no doubt be at the top of that list.
Yeah, I didnt hear that. The Best Buy I was watching it in (thankfully) had the sound off. But I agree theyre worlds apart, and conciously listening to anything Marcelo Balboa says is a recipe for heartburn. Thanks to him, all of America thinks Lukas Podolski is Germany's David Beckham and Marco Mazeratti is a world class defenderShiftyPowers said:I have nothing against him getting spray on a minor knock, I have a problem with Marcelo Balboa thinking it was the most courageous thing he's seen since Der Kaiser had to wear a sling in order to finish a World Cup game. It's not even close.
Well, you might have a valid argument there, that it couldve caused the Italians to choke. But to me they looked confident all game and blunted every French attack (despite the possession the French held second half). But when France was 6 inches from being 4/4, I think its safe to say they probably used the red card as motivation. Maybe the "lets win it for him" mentality crept inIt's said everywhere all the time, penalties are a battle of wills. When your captain gets sent off, or reverse it, if the other team's captain gets sent off, there's a morale shift. The Italians are not traditionally good penalty takers; without Zidane on the field, yes I think they got a boost. And hell, I think France may have scored in the last 10 minutes anyway; they were dominating and the Italians were just sitting back.

Every great has a shameful/heartbreaking moment. Spooning the penalty, kicking Diego Simeone, Rivaldo's dive, the kung fu kick. Theyre all shocking and stupid in their own way. But that just serves as an oddity, not why we remember them
ShiftyPowers said:For the record Num Lock (any anyone else who is French), I have nothing against France, in fact I was cheering for you. But Zidane should be absolutely ashamed of himself and he let down his entire country.

Well, rationalizing it like that, I might be able to see where youre coming from. When it happened, I didnt know what the f*ck was going on, to be honest. Then I saw the replays and thought "I cant believe he got away with that". So its likely that the French were at least very disheartened by itDaniel David said:On the long run Zidane's feats won't be overshadowed (a bit tainted perhaps), however it's clear his dismissal tipped the scales for Italy, technicaly and mentally - a hell of a shocking sight it was, even for a neutral fan.

This is how this French loser should always be remembered. Last game of his career, the most important game in the football world and he does this. What a waste.
ShearerM4 said:By the way it's interesting to note that Zidane picked up a total of 14 red cards during his career.
The same total as Roy Keane.
