I don't think people are referring to the "hand of God" goal as being the bad part about Maradona, I think the cocaine and getting sent home from WC 94 is the downfall of his legacy. And you know what? I do think of him being a coke head every time I hear Maradona's name.
Yes but im sure that at the time, people were accosting him as a worthless cheat. All the world could see that hand. Yeah he became a cokehead, but now that he is recovered, the guy is slowly gaining equal fame with Pele as a servant of the game.

Zidane is far too shy for that kind of status, in my opinion, but in 10 years time, this will be a sour, awful footnote on a sterling career

I cant wait to hear what Zidane has to say for himself

Zidane :alex: = Misyer Bonehead, Le Bonehead.........what an ass!

Sadly I will remember Zidane when I think of the word stupid. He won't be cracking the top 6 EVERRRRR! Maybe not even top 10 now......

The referee did not make any call on plays that resulted in

"Zidane.....he's on the grass! And the Italian side has the ball...."

That probably frustrated Zidane. I agree.....Materazzi, with all his yapping, was asking for a slap across his face.....but Zidane:rofl:.

Sorry mate, you just headbutted the World Cup away!

Secondly, how does this event turn him into

yeah hes done it before, but so what? If he hasnt gotten an reputation for it, there is reason for that

He didnt shrink under pressure. He had a brilliant game, as was his tournament, and this was a purely indefensible, braindead move.

Dude, I know I had this out with you before, but cmon, youre using this as an excuse to diminsh what he has accomplished, which remains immense. If Barthez still had any lift in his legs, they might just have won that shootout. Its not like they choked, exactly.

He does have a reputation for it; it's just that some people like to ignore all the bad things about their "heros" and only play up the good.

He did shrink from the pressure. Once again the best attacking player on France was Ribery; Zidane didn't do Carlos in my opinion except for score a penalty that I would have had Henry take anyway. You don't get sent off in a World Cup Final; it's a braindead move that DID cost his team the game, absolutely and unquestionably.

It does diminish what he has accomplished. In 1998 he was also a thug and a prick; is he allowed to headbutt players because he is Zidane and they aren't? In France, his legacy will always be 1998, but in the rest of the world, he will always be the idiot who cost his team a World Cup because he couldn't control his emotions. That's not a captain. Franz Beckanbauer would never have done that. Johan Cruyff would never have done that.

And by the way, Marcelo Balboa is an idiot, likening Beckanbauer wearing a sling and Zidane (who didn't make a "sub me" sign, he made a "it's my arm" sign) picking up a minor injury that needed 2 seconds of treatment.

....since Wednesday July 5th, 2006. Yes, it is.

I'd be surprised if this is not the first time that someone has said something offensive to him. What a time to act on your emotions......he was lacking in good judgement. Zidane:alex:

He was having an average game at best......people must have been suffering from brainfreeze to truly believe that he was having a GOOD game! good:rofl:

Zidane is the best player of the last 15 years mate a headbut won't be able to stop his legacy.

It was ingenious of him but knowing what a sumbeach Materazzi is i think he was badly provoked. That doesn't excuse him from the ugly thing he did but yet doesn't make him a player like others. Zidane is zidane no matter what.

No, Ribery played his worst match of the tournament. Malouda and Zizou were France's best.

This is how this French loser should always be remembered. Last game of his career, the most important game in the football world and he does this. What a waste.

It was obviously a spur of the moment thing.

You guys are making it sound like he had planned it all along.

He let his emotions get the best of him, it will not ruin his legacy you f*cking morons.

He will be remembered for many things......HEADBUTTING ONE OF HIS OPPONENTS IN THE CINGULAR MOST IMPORTANT GAME ON THE PLANET will no doubt be at the top of that list.:alex:

I thought Henry was one of Frances best. It was his nice header pass that put Malouda in space and got France the PK. It was actually quite strange watchin Thierry work his ass off as he doesnt really care for his country as much as he does for the Gunners. I think of Domench played Trez or Saha alongside him the whole tournament we would have seen a better Henry.

honestly shut the fu<k up.

It's sad that Zidane haters will always use this to claim he wasn't a legend. It'll all die down pretty soon.

I sort of agreed with most of that until you came out with that. How did it cost them the game? Barthez didnt stop a single penalty. Would his presence on the field after 110 minutes somehow have provided the winning goal or uplifted "fabien cool" to play like it was five years ago?

As for slating him with getting spray on a minor knock, well, does the guy have to be Roy Keane just to earn your respect? Because it seems like you have some kind of personal vendetta

I remember Roberto Baggio (the best player at 94 and a player with a great career) for blazing the final penalty over the bar, losing the final to Brazil in 1994. And you think Zidane won't be remembered for this headbutt? Come on.

How about headbutting two in Brazils net in the 1998 CINGULAR MOST IMPORTANT GAME IN THE PLANET?

How about footbanging one into Leverkusens net for the CL final?

Who hates Zidane, hates football.

I have nothing against him getting spray on a minor knock, I have a problem with Marcelo Balboa thinking it was the most courageous thing he's seen since Der Kaiser had to wear a sling in order to finish a World Cup game. It's not even close.

It's said everywhere all the time, penalties are a battle of wills. When your captain gets sent off, or reverse it, if the other team's captain gets sent off, there's a morale shift. The Italians are not traditionally good penalty takers; without Zidane on the field, yes I think they got a boost. And hell, I think France may have scored in the last 10 minutes anyway; they were dominating and the Italians were just sitting back.
