Kanoute makes Mali debut

Tottenham Hotspur striker Frederic Kanoute has made his official debut for his new country Mali, as they beat Algeria by two goals to nil.

Kanoute made an immediate impact on his side as he set up both goals for the Eagles.

Kanoute qualifies for his parents country of Mali under new Fifa rules, despite having played for France at under-21 level.

However Kanoute was not the only person switching allegiances to make his debut in the match, three Algerian players, who also played at French junior level were involved.

Bastia defender Antar Yahia, Abdelnasser Ouaddah from Ajaccio and the Belgian-based Samir Beloufa all featured for the Desert Foxes.

Mali took an early lead when Traore Dramane, who plays for Ismaili in Egypt, scored after just three minutes.

Greek-based midfielder Bassala Toure grabbed the second for the Eagles twelve minutes into the second half.

Mali play in Group B at the Nations Cup finals along with Burkina Faso, Kenya and Senegal, while Algeria are in Group C and will face Cameroon, Zimbabwe and Egypt.

Ok, an update on ART. Call 818-243-0278, and apparently a representative can confirm that the ANC will be shown on ART - which is available on DishNetwork.

The Red Devil
For Kaitano Tembo, playing at the African Cup of Nations will seal a remarkable recovery from personal tragedy.

The 33-year-old Zimbabwe vice-captain is dedicating his tournament to the memory of his wife, who died in a road accident in 1999.

The tragedy happened when Tembo was travelling to his South African club, SuperSport United, with his family after attending his mother's funeral.

The defender's daughter survived and was unhurt, while he suffered a broken arm and was sidelined for four months.

"My wife meant a lot to me, she really supported me during difficult times, and dedicating the tournament to her is the only way I can thank her for what she did," an emotional Tembo told the BBC Sport website.

He added: "It was difficult but a lot of people supported me, and I was able to pull through.

Kaitano Tembo
"It made me a stronger person as I had to look after our daughter and as football is my career, I couldn't give it up."

On his return to action Tembo put in some outstanding performances for SuperSport United.

He was subsequently recalled to the national team, following the appointment of Sunday Marimo as coach.

Tembo is now one of the most important players as Zimbabwe make their maiden appearance at the tournament.

"To qualify for the Nations Cup is quite an achievement and we're really excited about it," he said.

He said: "Before coming back to Italy after the Christmas holidays I publicly spoke of my wish not to participate in the African Cup because I still don't feel ready for such a tough and important commitment. Luis Ah-Hoy, our squad is pretty poor. We're missing Melkam (Hansa Rostock), Oruma (Sochaux) and Obodo (Perugia). And yet our coach has included Lawal (clubless and over the hill), Ekong (terrible player, plays in China) and a few other questionable inclusions. Plus Taribo West is out through injury, Udeze is suspended for the first two games and Okoronkwo at Wolves, hasnt played a single first team game all season. Our coach is spineless and clueless.
When we finally hire a competent coach, expect to see Martins for Nigeria.

Eagles team was picked from above, says Chukwu

•Queried over Ekong, Oruma, Obodo’s exclusion

By Ben Alaiya

Sports Editor

Super Eagles boss, Christian Chukwu, reportedly stammered to no end as he laboured to explain to Tijani Babangida, Gabriel Melkam and Christian Obodo why they did not make the team to the Tunisian 2004 Nations Cup, which was released last night, alleging that forces above him influenced the selection of the team.

Daily Independent gathered from one of the dropped players that immediately the team was announced, some of the players who felt they should have been in the team confronted Chukwu over why they were dropped from the squad and he told them in clear terms that he would have loved to have some of them in the team at the expense of players who were yet to arrive camp as of this morning but that forces above him would have nothing to do with his idea of a disciplined team for the Nations Cup.

NFA boss, Ibrahim Galadima, actually confirmed the development, when he told Daily Independent on Wednesday night that the Nations Cup task force has the last say on those who will make the team to the Nations Cup. That eventually accounted for the late selection of the team, which would now be submitted to the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) today by the NFA.

Football watchers were, however, unanimous that except for Ikpe Ekong, the team that was picked for the Nations Cup represented the best that the country could afford for the championship at the moment.

Ekong, who is a defensive midfielder, has not impressed in most of the friendly games played by the Eagles and it was thought that either Wilson Oruma, who is in top shape for the French side Sochaux, or Christian Obodo, who was one of the players that queried his exclusion, should have made the team ahead of Ekong, but the task force apparently thought otherwise. Below is the full team list and the numbers of the players

Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama (12), Greg Etafia (12), Austin Ejide (22)

Defenders: Joseph Yobo (2), Celestine Babayaro (3), Isaac Okoronkwo (5), Joseph Enakharire (6), Abbey George (15), Ifeanyi Udeze (16), Romanus Orjinta (1

Midfielders: Austin Okocha (10), Ikpe Ekong (19), Seyi Olofinjana (14), Garba Lawal (11), Ifeanyi Ekwueme (21)
