Gunner Edu gets Brazil call-up

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 13 (Reuters) - Arsenal midfielder Edu was one of four uncapped players named in the Brazil squad on Tuesday for this month's friendly in Hungary while Real Madrid striker Ronaldo was rested.

Edu, who has recently been quoted as saying he would consider playing for England if Brazil continued to overlook him, is in line for his first cap along with AS Roma full-back Mancini and German-based defenders Bordon and Dede.

Ronaldo, who is expected to be out of action for two weeks with a hamstring injury, was excluded from the match in Budapest on doctor's orders, coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said.

'This is his second injury in around one month, he has played 70 games already this season and we don't want to take any risks,' said Parreira.

'We want to preserve his health. He's not being dropped,' added Parreira, who said he wanted Ronaldo fully fit for June, when Brazil face World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Chile.

The world champions will be attempting to end a run of four successive draws -- the last two of them goalless -- and beat Hungary for the first time in the April 28 match.

The two sides have met four times with three draws and a win for Hungary at the infamous 1954 World Cup match dubbed 'The Battle of Berne.'

Parreira has been under increasing pressure to include Edu and Mancini and he said the Hungary match was the perfect chance to experiment.

'This will give us the chance to bring in some players who we've been observing for a while and who have been waiting for a chance,' he said.

Parreira denied he had been swung by reports that Edu would consider playing for England. 'That never came into it,' he said.

Volatile Sao Paulo striker Luis Fabiano, one of the top Brazilians still in his homeland, was also included along with Cruzeiro playmaker Alex.

Squad:

Goalkeepers - Marcos (Palmeiras), Dida (AC Milan, Italy)

Defenders - Cafu (AC Milan), Mancini (AS Roma, Italy), Dede (Borussia Dortmund, Germany), Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid, Spain), Bordon (VfB Stuttgart, Germany), Juan (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany), Lucio (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany), Roque Junior (Siena, Italy)

Midfielders - Edmilson (Olympique Lyon, France), Edu (Arsenal, England), Julio Baptista (Sevilla, Spain), Alex (Cruzeiro), Renato (Santos), Felipe (Flamengo), Juninho Permanbucano (Olympique Lyon, France), Ze Roberto (Bayern Munich, Germany), Kaka (AC Milan)

Forwards - Ronaldinho Gaucho (Barcelona, Spain), Luis Fabiano (Sao Paulo), Adriano (Inter Milan, Italy)

I think we should wear them more often. They are pretty stylish, and we'll probably never see them next year, seeing as we wear the red kit whenever possible.

Brilliant. Mancini is a very good player, too. Both fully deserve their callups. (Y)

Board's support kept Wenger at Highbury

Arsene Wenger, one of the world's most sought-after managers, has revealed the unequivocal support of the Arsenal board persuaded him to stay at Highbury rather than seek another job.

The Frenchman took over in 1996 and has stayed faithful to the club in the eight years since, despite reported interested from a host of European giants.

He has guided the Gunners to three FA Cup victories and his side now stand on the brink of their third title success.

With six games to play, Arsenal - unbeaten in all 32 league matches this season - are seven points clear of Chelsea, who have played a game more.

And Wenger, who has pledged to lead the club into their new Ashburton Grove home in August 2006, told the club's website: 'The board are very supportive. It's a 100% supportive atmosphere and that's why I'm still here.

'There was a time when the board had to be strong and they were. That's what makes the club special, as there's a trust that you don't find in many places.'

Wenger's skipper Patrick Vieira believes the side's spirit prevented their surprise FA Cup and Champions League exits having a knock-on effect on their league campaign.

Arsenal beat Liverpool and drew with Newcastle over Easter and Vieira said: 'I'm proud to be captain. Everybody gives their best.

'The atmosphere in the dressing room is fantastic.

'We have a good time and our togetherness is important. That showed against Newcastle because we were quite tired.'

The Gunners could take another giant step towards the championship crown on Friday night, when they face Leeds at Highbury.

Freddie Ljungberg and Ashley Cole are likely to miss out through injury but Ray Parlour could make a dramatic comeback despite limping out of a reserves match last night.

The midfielder, playing his first match since suffering a knee ligament injury two months ago, went over on his ankle against Portsmouth and came off after 65 minutes.

But reserve team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki said: 'He's fine and hopefully he'll be up for selection against Leeds.

'It's certainly a timely return. There are six games to go and we've missed his presence around the first-team squad.'

I hope Dennis stays and helps the likes of Bentley grow. He doesn't have to play, just continue living in England and maybe help out with the staff.
That would be ace.
