Edu: My thoughts are on staying

Arsenal midfielder Edu is set to sign an extension to his contract before the start of the season.

The 26-year-old played in Brazil's winning Copa America team and is currently resting before the start of the domestic campaign.

The former Corinthians players attracted interest from Barcelona last season after a string of impressive performances and his contract expires next summer, but he is looking to stay at Highbury.

Edu said: 'A lot of people know that my contract with Arsenal ends in 2005.

'But I want to confirm that I'm happy at Arsenal, nicely settled in. They're a great club and my thoughts are on staying.'

The playmaker was signed by Arsene Wenger in 2001 but did not immediately settle in.

Last season was regarded as Edu's most consistent as he helped the Gunners to the Premiership title.

'Without doubt this last year was my best at Arsenal,' he said on his official website.

'When I arrived at the club the season was already under way and it was hard to adapt because everything was so different.

'In my second season we won the FA Cup and the Premier League, I played more and became more a part of the team. 'Since then I've played even more, my performances have improved and everything has got better.

'But I'm certain that the seasons ahead will be even better still.'

Senior Squad
KANU SEALS BAGGIES SWITCH

West Brom manager Gary Megson has bolstered his squad ahead of the new campaign with the capture of Nigerian international Nwankwo Kanu.
The Baggies boss is desperate to add experience to his squad upon their return to the top flight and, having completed a move for Jonathon Greening, has now wrapped up a deal for Kanu.

The gifted but inconsistent forward had previously stated his desire to move to Midlands rivals Aston Villa but has now inked a deal with West Brom.

''The managers of some clubs came to see me personally at my house in London to declare their interest in me,'' Kanu told kickoffnigeria.com.

''But I must say that West Brom's Gary Megson sounded like the one with the best plans for me.

''That I was kept out in the cold for the greater part of last season, informed my decision to go for a club that keeps me busy, that will really see me play and get my game back to the Kanu that the world used to know.''

The capture of Kanu represents an ambitious swoop for the Premiership new boys and could prove to be an astute piece of business should the player perform to his abilities next season.

Kanu has not long been wed and the giant forward admits that he would be reluctant to move away from his partner, which ultimately led him to rule out a switch to Spain.

''I want to stay in England with my wife so that she can conveniently continue her university education and of course be at home with me,'' he concluded.

The player has inked a three-year deal at The Hawthorns after passing a medical.

I'm happy to see Kanu go to a quality club where he will get all the playing time that he deserves, I wish that we could have kept him here but at least i will still get to see him play in the EPL
