Rampant Roma already have one foot in the UEFA Cup group stages following the 5-1 destruction of Aris Salonika. A goal in the first minute by Alberto Aquilani set the ball rolling as the Giallorossi controlled the game from start to finish.

Boss Luciano Spalletti, who was actually serving a one-match ban in the stands, opted to field a relatively strong line-up even though he was without the injured Antonio Cassano. Vincenzo Montella started in attack, supported by a trident of Amantino Mancini, Francesco Totti and Rodrigo Taddei.

The Cypriot rearguard were clearly up against a formidable attacking force and their resistance didn’t last long. Aquilani gave his side the lead immediately once he latched on to a Montella cross, which was expertly left by Taddei.

The Under-21 international threatened to double his personal tally in the 16th minute but his powerful drive was blocked by Pourliotopoulos. The ‘keeper was then beaten just five minutes later, but the post came to his rescue following a deflected Montella effort.

A second goal was clearly on its way and it arrived thanks to an unlikely source. An unmarked Christian Panucci was handed the simple task of heading in an Aquilani centre from close range.

Roma made it three in the 28th minute when Montella added his name to the scoresheet. Aquilani was again the provider as his assist was comfortably slotted home by the former Sampdoria hitman.

It was all getting a little too easy for the home side even if Sanjurio did test Curci with an unexpected effort. Roma ignored that warning shot and were duly punished soon after by the same player. He tried his luck from 30 yards and the ball whizzed past the Roma ‘keeper.

Aris celebrations were short-lived however, as the Italian club re-established their three-goal lead with Panucci’s second of the game. With less than a minute of the half remaining, the controversial defender used his head to good effect yet again.

There were no changes at half-time and no real change to the pattern of play as Roma hit their fifth in the 53rd minute. Captain Totti delighted the 20,000 crowd with an accurate low left foot shot from the edge of the area. The same player had the chance to net a brace soon after but he messed up a lob with just the ‘keeper to beat.

The game had little left to offer given Roma’s advantage, but Totti continued to threaten. His quest for a second saw a well struck free-kick miss the target, before he did put the ball in the back of the net on 77 minutes. However, his effort was disallowed for a dubious offside.

With qualification virtually secured, Spalletti will now have the luxury of resting a few of his key players for the return leg in two weeks time.

Roma: Let us entertain you Friday 16 September, 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------
Roma chief Franco Sensi has promised fans that Antonio Cassano and Co will entertain them this season.

The ageing President was at the Stadio Olimpico last night where he witnessed the 5-1 demolition of Aris Salonika.

And he has today told the Giallorossi support that Luciano Spalletti’s offensive tactics will provide moments of champagne football.

"This squad is excellent and just how I expected it to be," Sensi stated. "This team is one that entertains and I’m convinced we will have fun this season. You’ll see."

Sensi also dedicated Thursday’s rampage to the fans after a difficult past year at the Stadio Olimpico.

"I want to thank them for always remaining close to me and Roma," he continued. "They know that I am here for them too."

Director general Daniele Prade' was also satisfied with what the side offered in the UEFA Cup match.

"It is a win that will do some real good to the squad, it makes no difference whom we were up against," he commented.

"We need to continue on this path in an effort to get to the Final in Eindhoven next year."

Prade' also hinted that there could be significant developments in the Cassano contract saga.

"It was good to see him at the Olimpico even if he was injured," the official added. "It was an important sign.

"His contract renewal? Let’s say that we will meet up soon."

Cassano’s present agreement expires in June, but he is now expected to put pen to paper on a new Olimpico deal.

Cassano ready to resign? I guess that's for the best for all teams. If Roma can keep him and keep up their good play then I definatley count Roma as a contender this year under Spalletti. They may be lagging a bit behind the other 3 though.

Is this thread still alive? How is Roma playing? The results are dissapointing, but maybe they play attractive football?

I thought it was all wrapped up? Well that sucks for Roma. Maybe Moratti will actually jump and get him. We sure could use another star player upfront.

yeah you guys go ahead and believe that

He keeps stalling and delaying proceedings... if he wanted to show his commitment he would have done so long ago.

With the world cup coming up, the fans breathing down his neck, pressure from the club etc etc, he could have put an end to this on going saga some time ago ! but nope.

He's leaving... one way or another.

Roma 'terminate' Cassano talks
Saturday 15 October, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Antonio Cassano’s rapport with Roma has truly broken down, as the club confirmed today it would not hold any more contract negotiations.

“I will not meet Cassano or his agent any more,” stated Giallorossi director Rosella Sensi on ‘Radio Radio.’

“The negotiations are terminated. We made an impressive proposal, but he did not give us an answer. Our tolerance in this matter has reached its limit.”

Cassano’s current deal expires at the end of the season and it’s reported he was offered a new two-year contract, but the player was unhappy with the proposed terms.

With the possibility of losing him on a free transfer in June rapidly approaching, it looks almost certain now that Roma will aim to sell the Italian international during the January transfer window.

Several clubs, including Juventus, Real Madrid, Milan and Chelsea, have been linked with the player in recent months, but his favoured destination would be with former Roma Coach Fabio Capello in Turin.

“We want to keep Cassano and there is no ultimatum,” insisted Sensi in a bid to calm the tension. “We made him an important offer, as only Francesco Totti would have higher wages at Roma.”

He had already been frozen out of the squad earlier this season for refusing to pen a new contract and this latest setback could put him back on the sidelines.

“I never said he wouldn’t play, but we do need people who are focusing on football rather than contracts. Luciano Spalletti will make a decision based on those factors.”

Spalletti was eager to toe the party line on this issue in his Press Conference today. “I need to have a meeting with the club. If Sensi said these things then there will certainly have been a reason and I will stick with Roma on this.”

Say bye to Antonio. :ewan:
