Rampant Roma already have one foot in the UEFA Cup group stages following the 5-1 destruction of Aris Salonika. A goal in the first minute by Alberto Aquilani set the ball rolling as the Giallorossi controlled the game from start to finish.
Boss Luciano Spalletti, who was actually serving a one-match ban in the stands, opted to field a relatively strong line-up even though he was without the injured Antonio Cassano. Vincenzo Montella started in attack, supported by a trident of Amantino Mancini, Francesco Totti and Rodrigo Taddei.
The Cypriot rearguard were clearly up against a formidable attacking force and their resistance didn’t last long. Aquilani gave his side the lead immediately once he latched on to a Montella cross, which was expertly left by Taddei.
The Under-21 international threatened to double his personal tally in the 16th minute but his powerful drive was blocked by Pourliotopoulos. The ‘keeper was then beaten just five minutes later, but the post came to his rescue following a deflected Montella effort.
A second goal was clearly on its way and it arrived thanks to an unlikely source. An unmarked Christian Panucci was handed the simple task of heading in an Aquilani centre from close range.
Roma made it three in the 28th minute when Montella added his name to the scoresheet. Aquilani was again the provider as his assist was comfortably slotted home by the former Sampdoria hitman.
It was all getting a little too easy for the home side even if Sanjurio did test Curci with an unexpected effort. Roma ignored that warning shot and were duly punished soon after by the same player. He tried his luck from 30 yards and the ball whizzed past the Roma ‘keeper.
Aris celebrations were short-lived however, as the Italian club re-established their three-goal lead with Panucci’s second of the game. With less than a minute of the half remaining, the controversial defender used his head to good effect yet again.
There were no changes at half-time and no real change to the pattern of play as Roma hit their fifth in the 53rd minute. Captain Totti delighted the 20,000 crowd with an accurate low left foot shot from the edge of the area. The same player had the chance to net a brace soon after but he messed up a lob with just the ‘keeper to beat.
The game had little left to offer given Roma’s advantage, but Totti continued to threaten. His quest for a second saw a well struck free-kick miss the target, before he did put the ball in the back of the net on 77 minutes. However, his effort was disallowed for a dubious offside.
With qualification virtually secured, Spalletti will now have the luxury of resting a few of his key players for the return leg in two weeks time.
