Messi, Henry, and Maradona gestures ar far from what Drogba, Dani Alves or Ronaldo do on the pitch.

First ones are reflexes made for the team and saved great matches, the other ones are dives and stuff made to make the opponent angry and get yellow or red cards. They are completly diferrent things.

exactly. Mandieta6 said he played. But again those reflexes aren't something everybody can do. That's why Maradona was considered such a genius on the pitch.

Have YOU ever played any semi-serious football match? The Hand of God by Maradona and Messi (I dunno about Henry, haven't bothered to watch it really), were deliberate. It's not a reflex if you think about it, and if you say that they did it for the team, then they thought about it. It also shows a lack of sportsmanship as bad a diving. Drogba has barely dived since Hiddink, it's about time this improvement gets acknowledged.

You can't condemn divers and let off guys who handle the ball. It's both or none. Actually, diving is more of a habit (that can be formed because you get tackled a lot), and is more defendable that the aformentioned incidents, because those changed matches. A world-cup-winning-penalty-through-dive is just as bad.

If it were the other way around, and Xavi was the diver, and Lampard the hand of god, guy, you would be on him like a dog, and wouldn't say **** about Xavi. I can't believe you can defend the Messi incident and attack diving.

Btw, I play for a footie team, and I haven't dived or cheated delibaretly. I'm an 18-year-old striker playing 30-year-old defenders, believe me I get fouled. Cheating is a choice.

Funniliy enough, I'm not really that averse it.

If Messi is a cheater wtf are Balack,Drogba,Adebayor or Tony then?

Cheaters, but we are talking about the two cheats who were handed the award, otherwise we could be here forever naming all the cheats in football.

Two wrongs don't make a right. You cannot defend cheating by saying other players do it too. That does not excuse anything.

Cheating is NOT AN INSTINCT. A true sportsperson's instinct is NOT TO CHEAT. The only type of person who instinctively cheats IS A CHEAT. Can't you understand that?

I agree. Also, suppose they "instinctively" handled the ball or dived, why didn't they immediately contact the ref and inform him that the goal shouldn't count or the penalty shouldn't be awarded? Instead, they go and celebrate the goal like nothing has happened.
Every single team has at least one or two cheaters.

So by your standards everyone who has ever commited a foul is a dirty cheater?

Go on then, if none of these cheaters deserve the award, show me who does (apart from Ljungberg, obv). Why do you even care so much about who won it? You were hoping Lamps won it instead (probably a cheater as well, though, must've done something wrong in his past, what a bastard)? Or are you just bitter about the semis?

Even if Messi was the biggest cheater in the world, this trophy is awarded to the best player in Europe for this past year, and you can't sincerely say, that he didn't deserve. If you have to bring up his handball, I'll remind you, it wasn't even this season, therefore it shouldn't be discussed.

Ok! First of all i don't agree and i'll tell you why:

To become a great football player you also have to know some tips;when to fall, when and how to make a foul and many other things like that. You also need talent, hard work and a healthy life style. But are these things enough? unfortunately and definetely NO!
Let me give you an example; Do you consider that a defender is fair-play when he makes a bad and ugly challenge to a striker feet?
I suppose your answer is "no".Agree! But is the foul a part of the game ? yeap,it is! Now, is the defender a cheater cause he made a bad foul? And you know what? If the referee saw his foul, then, the player is not considered a cheater. It's so simple!
So, who decides if a player is cheating or not? God, you, me, others? nope-the refferee does that.Every player is trying to take advantage of some ingame situations to create better chances for his team. Are we blaming that? It's all about the instinct and the way he feels in that second. It's in our human nature and we can't escape!:) Cheers!

You found one video, and one where he doesn't even dive... Good job. It's clear Ujfalusi caught him with his leg. His reaction would be very different if it didn't.

In that video he is jumping before any contact is even made, if any is amde whatesover.

Anyways there is also the foul against Chelsea when he was like 17 years old. I believe it was Del Horno who got red carded. Diving isn't always about falling without any contact, it also is diving when the player falls on minimal contact that wouldnt knock down a baby, or even when the player looks for contact and then dives like he did againt Del horno.

Anyways there are worse examples of divers than Messi. who in all fairness doesnt dive nearly as much as others (Iniesta, Alves, Ronaldo, etc...). Messi is smart about it and looks for even the minimal contact to drop.

My two cents about this. Messi is the best during the year and deserves it, but man you Barca fans need to get things straight. The importance of Messi to the team was not as important as Ronaldo was to Manchester United. How can Messi be the best by far and how can his team rely upon him when that same team has Iniesta (who you guys says should be 2nd) and Xavi who came third or Etoo who came 5th. You telling me a team that has the 2nd and 3rd best playes in teh world and the 4th best based on your opinions relies upon Messi solely.

Manchester struggled while Ronaldo was out and then came to life around teh time he came back and eneded up winning the league and going to the CL final. He does deserve the 2nd place IMO.

Messi does deserve the award cuz he is amazing, but one of the criteria for such awards should be the importance of a player to the team.

When Messi doesnt start or doesnt play, 90% of the time your team does not miss a beat.

So stop being arrogant by saying that Barca should have had the podium.

If Messi keeps gracing this world with his ingenious and beautiful way of playing the game, I don't mind him diving at all.

You have your arguments. But the problem is that you found the worst possible video ;)
