Kaka wins Ballon d'Or
Brazilian beats Ronaldo and Messi to award

Milan playmaker Kaka has won the 2007 Ballon d'Or, beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to the prestigious prize.

The Brazilian was an inspirational figure in Milan's UEFA Champions League success last season and had been a strong favourite for the award.

He came out on top in his duel with Ronaldo, when the Italian giants beat Manchester United in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The 25-year-old received 444 points in a France Football poll of 96 journalists, with Ronaldo collecting 277 points in second place.

Kaka succeeds Italy's Fabio Cannavaro as recipient of the Ballon d'Or, while Ronaldinho was the last Brazilian to win the award in 2005.

Sensational

Upon receiving the award, Kaka said: "It has been a sensational year in which I also won the Champions League.

"I thank God for being here and lifting up this award. I must say that this award is the conclusion of a really sensational year.

"I thank my wife, my parents. I also thank Milan, the coach, my team-mates. It's beautiful being part of such a brilliant side and you can't win it without them.

"It's the top prize around and the only way to win something like this is to play for a team like AC Milan. It's great to be part of a team that wins."

Kaka is expected to return to Milan on Sunday afternoon to parade the award in front of Rossoneri supporters.

Meanwhile, Kaka, Ronaldo and Barcelona ace Messi are on the three-man short list for the Fifa World Player of the Year, which will be determined later this month.

I think Kaka got this award based on the fact Milan won the champions league. Considering Milan sacrificed their peformances in the league to do that, which allowed their best players to play to their potential in the important champions league games, is the reason I think Ronaldo deserved it. Ronaldo peformed through all the competitions, and scored a ridiculous amount of goals for a winger.

But theres always next year, and I believe Ronaldo is leading the goal scoring charts in the CL with Ibrahimovic ? And Man Utd are the only team with a 100% record. Plus he's already into double figures overall for scoring, so things are looking up.

frankly i think its a disgrace, i mean yes kaka was outstanding in the CL but lets face it that was 12 games of the whole year. where ronaldo was amazing in the epl, leading the team toa championship, fa cup final and a semi final in the cl. and what about milan? where did they finish?

even this season ronaldo is way out performing kaka domestically and in the cl. and lets not talk about internationals. ronaldo the midfielder witha goal every other game statisically for portugal.

lets face it the only reason kaka won is cos hes brazilian and plays in italy, and well all know how much people hate english teams, i mean its a french award...given the recent outbursts by platini im not suprised it went to kaka.

i would agree that kaka and ronaldo are the best in the world at the moment, i jsut dispute the fact that they have kaka first
