Building myself a comp

Joe Star

Starting XI
So I'm finally almost set to build my 1st one. Here's what i'm going for with my (sadly) limited budget.

PSU & Casing
Still pending.....depends on my budget. Probably will get a mid-range casing that comes with a decent PSU.

Processor
Athlon 64 X2 3800+

Mobo
MSI MS7125F K8N4 nForce4ultra Platinum Edition

RAM
Corsair XMS PC3200 1GB

Gfx Card
256MB MSI NX6800GS

I already got a dvd burner & a 40GB hard-drive that I'll put into the new comp. The hard-drive is temporary though because I'll be getting a 200GB HD later. Apart from that the monitor & sound system are secondary to me. Will probably borrow a pair of speakers & monitor from a friend while saving up for a proper sound system & an LCD.

My main uses? Lots of multi-tasking. Usually I have video encoding & bittorent running while I play games, something which has become impossible these days with my comp. I'm into gaming as well but not a stickler for eye-candy. A decent looking game with a good fps is enough for me. Besides that I also dabble with CD ripping & audio conversion.

So.....any thoughts?

I'd suggest getting a better PSU. Maybe 430-500watts would be enough. Get a reputable brand like antec, veridium..etc.

What's your budget anyway?
Maybe we can help you to optimize you budget.

hmm.......for the cpu.....its around US$800. But keep in mind i'm in Malaysia.....so prices might not be what they are in the US

get other manufacture mobo, MSI sucks (N)

may be 2GB of RAM since you're running dual core. at least Microsft recommend it for Vista :p

Nah the another 1gb ram he can add on when he goes along. Remember he's on a tight budget.

JOE!!!!
YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT?! US$800 For Athlon 64 X2 3800+?!
It only cost S$570 over here. Or do you mean the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (939) which still only costs S$1175.

Are sure the guy ain't ripping you off?

Hehe mate.....you got me all wrong :p. I was refering to the ENTIRE cpu....not just the processor. The cheapest I can get the processor here is RM1200 or US$324.....which is I think a little less than the figure you mentioned. Yea....high performance RAM isnt exactly cheap & the corsair xms is already one of the cheapest, so I'll go for 2Gb when the need arises.

phew...lol. Why don't you just get a regular ram with decent overclocking allowance and get yourself a better gfx card or another stick of 1gb.

Joe Star

True.......I will consider that mate. Didnt wanna start messing round with the parts til at least the warranty ends ;) Gonna be getting the parts in 2 stages. Processor & mobo with the casing & psu this weekend & the RAM, gfx card & other parts in about 2 weeks.

So when you get the first part you won't start using it till the 2nd part is purchased. Or you will use your current RAMs and GFX card while waiting to purchase the 2nd part of the stuff?

Man, I'm also itching to build a new rig. lol.

Joe Star

Nope.....current stuffs all seriously out-of-date. SDRAM & AGP 4X card :| The comps gonna stay silent for a while, & I'll only get to fire it up when I get the rest of the hardware. So, if I do go with the normal memory, I could get a better card thats for sure. Any recommendations? Below US$270 btw :p

6800GS or 7300LE?

damn, i'm desperate to build myself a new comp now :p to get rid of my 5 years old P4 1.6GHz + 256mb RAM + AGP 4x :|

Joe Star

Heh.......I was thinking of the 6800GS as well. You know what......thats the exact same config of my current :sb9: rig. By the way.....any idea which regular RAM allows for such tweaking?

Woohoo.....I've gotten the ball rolling!!! :D Got myself the casing, processor & mobo. Was supposed to get the p.s.u as well but the trader kinda freaked when I told him I wanted a 430W & did his best to convince me to get a 500W(which is like US$20-30 costlier :| ). Well I decided to do more research before commiting. The 430W & te 450W are pretty closely priced but the 500W is much higher priced. So what do you guys think? Btw, I'm getting the 6800GS....just got a little extra boost to my budget ;)

EDIT: Will post some pics when I get the chance. The jet-black motherboard looks cool thru the see-thru side panel. & the casings pretty good looking(to me at least :p ) as well.

450w should be enough, not necessary to use 500w psu i guess

btw, don't tell me you get the MSI mobo (H)

Joe Star

Yes i did.....coz everything else in that price range is pretty crappy. I've got a serious distrust for ASUS btw.......my current 1 is an ASUS & its ****e :(
