United lucky this season? You gotta be kidding me. We haven't been more unlucky than Chelsea. More or less the same on luck.

You're right that United has been poor so far. No team is shining so far but we've been less crap than other elite teams, thats why we're on top. Simple as that. Weird season this is turning out to be. Very weird. Either the elite teams have weakened, or the mid table teams are getting stronger. I'd say its a combination of both.

I think the only solution for Chelsea is to spend. Your team is short on depth and most stars are in their 30s. You need replacement otherwise your decline will continue. You shouldn't sell your seniors. They can serve as excellent backup players. You need younger fresh blood.

You need to open up the cheque book, simple. United have Hernandez, Nani, Anderson, Smailing, twins all growing up to be great players. We didn't produce any of them, just spent a bit of money on potential and got it. Chelsea needs to do the same, can't really produce good players all by yourself nowadays.

With Chelsea's policy of changing managers every year its impossible to adopt this kind of principle. How can you develop players with different managers every single year? Thats why the only solution for them is spend. You can have a manager who decides to develop young players, and the next season he's fired and the new manager decides to sell all of them. This will never work.

Otherwise, I agree with the policy of developing players from a young age. Its the ideal policy. Look at Barcelona for instance. They have an excellent academy and most of their players are from there. And they tend to stick to their managers for longer. Look at the Arsenal of the earlu 2000s. Players like Vieira, Henry and Pires were brought in at very young ages.

To be fair, since Mourinho, only one manager has been fired because he wasn't working out, the others were temporary fixes from the moment they were signed. And Carlo has been here for more than a season, so we'll see. We do need stability though and I want Carlo to stay.

It will be pretty daft to sack Carlo based on the temporary dip in form. He brought you the double in his first season and im sure he will pull chelsea out of this.

I think Carlo should stay - one reason Arsenal and Man Utd have been such successful clubs is because they have had one steady manager who is totally associated and loyal to the club for so long and is comfortable and able to act with a free(ish) hand - and I have envied that stability throughout the Abramovic years. Also, Carlo's experience and track record give him as good a shot as anyone else at getting us out of this, though I have to admit he has never been particularly impressive in the transfer market, at Milan or in his period at Chelsea so far.

In an ideal world I'd like us to have found some way to keep Hiddink.

You've been piss, piss poor and played dreadfully week in week out (with the exception of the three or four games Berbatov has decided he could actually be bothered to try and score) and yet remained unbeaten. That is unbelievably lucky. Just look at the recent West Brom game if you want an example - without amazing luck you'd have lost that one rather than win it.

piss poor? thats something i would associate with chelsea at the moment.
The only game i would say we were lucky was west brom. West brom didnt take their chances and we did. Yes,we have not been playing brilliantly but we have been good enough and strong enough. So stop making sweeping and daft statements. We are unbeaten and top of the league for a reason.

We've been piss poor in 3 games this season. The rest we were at the very least just as good as the other team. Maybe you are so used to seeing United run over opponents like a freight train, that a "decent" performance seems piss poor to you. If we had as much luck as you claim we had, then Chelsea would be staring at a 20 point deficit right now.

Our squad isn't good enough simple as that. I don't give a toss about how well other teams do, but we were at one stage, 5 points clear. What went wrong? Injuries. And how did we cope last season? We had the squad to cope. And we did. This season, totally different story.

Last season, we had the squad depth and were able to summon backup(decent backup) even if we didn't have our first team players.

We lost Drogba, Essien, Kalou to the African Cup of Nations. Then we subsequently lost Essien and Bosingwa for the whole season. But we had a squad of players with Premiership experience under their belts.(apart from Zhirkov).

What happened this season was, when we lost Lamps we were still doing okay, but didn't have the players to keep the squad fresh. Squad rotation wasn't done enough, we only played our youngsters for 20mins per game and overplayed most of our senior players.

No Deco, Ballack, Belletti to backup Lampsy, Mikel, Essien.
I want to add that Ramires is poor as of late but he isn't the finished article by any means(he does need time to adapt, and he's being made a scapegoat when the whole squad is performing badly).

No Carvalho to backup JT,Iva, Alex. Bruma needs more experience, we should've loaned him out early on in the season, he would've had more games and experience under his belt.

The press/some fans are making this out to be Carlo's fault, but I don't believe that even the slightest. We started great this season, playing the so-called small teams and winning big, we even won against Arsenal.

The Liverpool game(which came after the midweek CL game) was the first sign that our squad was fatigued. From then on, it just built and the results kept on becoming worst as we lost more players to injuries and suspension. Wilkins getting "sacked" didn't help matters and it continued to the position where we are right now.

Now we can't even beat the same teams which we pummeled early in the season, where people were saying we had the easier fixture list.

I agree Carlo isn't to blame right now, its the people behind the scene who keep making bad decisions. I don't see whats happening now as a bad thing. The team needed a reality check, should be interesting how they handle this now.

7-0, didn't watch it. A lot of first-teamers played, which I'm not too thrilled about because I think we need to give them more rests. Anyway, thrashed them, and I hope this gives us a confidence boost and we carry it over.

Nice win against Blackburn, we still looked nervy but at least after weeks of dropping points at the last moment, we looked commanding throughout the end of the game.

Bolton away will be a much more difficult test.

Kakuta and Aanholt off on loan, to Fulham and Leicester. Thought Aanholt could play at the Prem, but any first-team action is good, I suppose. Means we have fewer players to rotate though, even if they are youngsters who weren't getting much shots. Sincerely hope they do well, hope to see Kakuta fire it up.

Also, good victory over Bolton, clinical, hope we've turned a corner. McEachran is a great prospect, but he's more of a Busquets than a Xavi, he loses few balls because he plays simple passes, but still, with time, and confidence, he'll improve, he showed that he does have an eye for a pass, although I'm still reluctant to overhype him.

Luiz deal is popular, although I don't like the rumor about a youngster going the other way. Especially because the ones sounded are good prospects.

Latest I've heard is 25 M € + one player. One of the conditions is precisely the addition of a youngster with a good margin of development.

Portuguese media reports today Manchester City is also following these negotiations. Chelsea is a much better club for him, especially if we consider City has like 30 CBs in the squad.

Mellis out on loan to Barnsley, Sturridge to Bolton and it seems very likely that Torres and Luiz will be ours by tomorrow. Let's see.

In a world where Darren Bent is worth 25M and Andy Carroll is worth 35M, 50M for Fernando Torres doesn't seem unreasonable.

So, the transfer craze, amongst other things, means I won't be able to recover sleep today, so, might as well discuss this prematurely.

1. The club has stated today that for the first time since Roman, we have been cash positive, i.e making a profit. It's a relatively small profit, and doesn't include the potentially record-breaking transfers we might be making now, but still, it's encouraging.

2. I'm weary about both transfers because they both might involve players leaving, and I don't want Torres in exchange for Anelka plus cash, honestly. We'll see, though.

3. Not enthusiastic about paying out the nose for players on deadline day, but hey, if it means titles this year, I can't really complain.

4. Sturridge out on loan too? So much for investing in youth. 2 multi-million panic buys, and while I agree that we need to make the squad younger and better, I don't want to go back to spending over developping our own talent. That said, Sturridge and Kakuta could really benefit from the moves, since they'll probably get more chances. If they don't break those squads, they're not going to break into ours.

5. Davi Luiz, I really haven't seen enough of him to judge, but we've been after him for a long time, and we definitely need another top quality CB. Not sure if he'll oust Ivanovic or Alex out of the other starting spot, but if he does, then I'll be excited. I think we have 3 world-class CBs, and for him to get a starting berth would mean that he's at least just as good. And he's young. Bruma won't go on loan to West Brom, though, and I would keep him around for when we're dominating and bleed him in. Bruma's got talent, Luiz should be replacing Carvalho, not him. Bruma was never going to be able to step up that much.

6. So, the big question is, what to do with Torres? As of right now, I'd start him on the bench and if he delivers, I'd remove Malouda for now and have the trident of Torres, Drogs and Anelka constantly rotate, with Torres and Drogs pinning the defense back, allowing Anelka to work his magic in he space in front of the defense. I'd move Drog wide unless Torres shows the potential to work from that position. Drogs has played this role sometimes, with Kalou or Anelka drifting in, but I highly doubt he will adapt to the role well enough to stay there. Really, Torres would be Drogba's successor. I'm not deluding myself into thinking he and Torres will click, I'm not sure they'll even compliment each other, although if they do, it will be terrifying. I think the rotation will be great for the squad, and Malouda could play in the midfield 3 and the attacking 3.

7. If Torres does arrive, there's a good chance he'll make his debut against Liverpool. Now, for me, the most important thing is to beat Pool, and heavily if possible, and show that we've really turned a corner and are back in the game, and I think there's a better chance of that happening without Torres in the team. As good as he is, I doubt he'll blend into the squad right away, he'll probably get subbed in. Would be sweet if he scored though.

So, assuming all goes well and the players blend in quickly, we're looking at:

Drogba - Torres - Anelka
Lampard - Mikel - Essien
Cole - Terry - Luiz - Bosingwa
Cech

Subs: Turnbull, Alex, Ivanovic, McEachran, Ramires, Malouda, Kalou

I'm currently favoring this formation because I envision Drogba playing realtively central, between the CB and RB, but moving wide to recieve longballs, fighting for them with the physically waker fullback and menacing to move diagonally, with Torres using his pace to break from behind the defense, the movement allowing Anelka to come in from wide or Essien/Lamps to move into the space, not to mention the overlap from the fullbacks, this could be done on either wing, and I definitely think that a lot of the weaker defenses would be very intimiated by the prospect of dealing with the pace, strength an quality of such an attack.

Regarding the bench, there's also Yossi eventually getting back into the thick of things, hopefully not Josh's expense. We'd also have Zhirkov to consider, and now that's a great bench to have, with hopefully Sturridge, Kakuta, Bruma, Matic and van Aanholt especially pushing for first-team action next season. Delac hasn't played at Vitesse yet, so he's not ready to usurp Ross' position, so I wouldn't object to spending a few extra mill and getting Begovic or poach whoever ManU want to sign.
