Just got sent an email from a friend, included is an article he quotes from some webpage, (and yeah, he was in a Sydney bar.. :D). No damn bars open at 3am in Western Oz. :( ;)

******

I like this one.... especially the last paragraph!!! - cos I was! And
I saw the pain on the pommie faces.

Quote, from a convo in the dunny after the match: "It was only a
friendly... now we can move on to more important things, like
scrabble........ cluedo was good for a while, but then the cluedo thugs
started roaming the country ruining it for everyone"

PS - Beer taste good at 6am! :>

PPS - I'm still at work and i'm 3/4 cut! :(

PPPS - I have a hangover at 2pm :(

Ashes to ashes as Aussies bash the Poms again
By Simon Barnes

AT FIRST it was hard to know what to burn: I’m not one of those people
who buys Michael Owen’s old betting slips or David Beckham’s hair-drier
in charity auctions.
In the end I chose to incinerate a plastic football lying unloved and
deflated in the garden. It had the right kind of banality about it. The
ashes will be placed in an urn and presented to Sven-Goran Eriksson
with the words: “In loving memory of English football.” I hope they
will be sent to Australia, unlike the cricketing Ashes which reside at
Lord’s.

For last night Australia beat England at football. They won 3-1, having
secured victories at Test match cricket, one-day cricket and Davis Cup
tennis. Had you noticed that Australian teams have a marked taste for
beating the Poms? Of course you had, but someone should really have
told Eriksson. Harried by the crazy dominance of English club football
over the international side, he opted to make this an unabashed
practice game with a different team for each half.

No one explained to him that Australians don’t do practice games, least
of all against the Poms. No one explained to him that it’s not a good
idea for Englishmen to patronise Australians, either.

What happened was that the England team — that is, both England teams —
went out for a kickabout and Australia went out for a full-blooded
football match. England thought it all came down to a question of
class, and so it proved. England simply oozed class — and all of it
third.

It will become one of the landmark humiliations of England’s
footballing history. It stands comparison with the most embarrassing
defeat of all: when England lost to the US in the World Cup of 1950.
This was less horrific, because it was“not a competitive match”.
Australia, however, realised that a game between two sides tends to
have a competitive element to it.

The fumes of the molten plastic affront my nostrils. Still, it had to
be done. And it could be worse. I could have been watching in a Sydney
bar.

This is Bragging Rights, on any England vs Australia sporting event, on BBC SportsTalk for the next year.

They where playing for Pride and Bragging Rights

Another Sport we beat England at.

I would make a list, but I don't have that much time.

Yesssss! 3-1 to the Socceroos! It was cool. I was only going to watch the 1st half with my mates at Federation Square but it was so good that we ended up watching the whole thing and being 50 mins late for class. hahaha
Did anybody else here go to Fed Square because the atmosphere was awesome, it was like being at the game! We all really got into the cheering, chanting, shouting abuse at Gary Neville and Beckham, it was so cool!
I think it was one of the best performances by the Aussies in a long time, they used the ball well and had a smooth run of play. Harry's goal was brilliant but I guess so were the other two. This day will never be forgotten. :)

Jeffers didn't deserve his spot huh?

He was the only one that scored for England.

Anyway that's pretty funny, if I was the FA of Wales, or the US -- Canada even, i'd be trying to get meyself a match right now! (H)

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!!! This is a great day for oceanic football. Everything has been going uphill since we got direct qualification.

Yeah, i sorta screwed up the whole day by waking up at 5:45 to be ready at 6am when i thought the game started :$.

basically watched the first half at home, went to school, smuggled a radio into english to hear the second half, remembered that i had a maths test 5 minutes before it started.......... and yeah. tonight i have football trials, and i can't watch the repeat (coz my vcr is screwed up )

PS this has inspired me to start making the "brand new" SG Oceania (re-naming FIFA Oceania with a new layout thingie ;)).

Congrats to Aussie !!

I saw the highlights that England played so bad on the 1st half match. Thing was upside down in the 2nd half when England played better. Rio Ferdinand was not impressive. Rooney's debut was quite classy in this match.

I think it's a good learning experience for England youngsters to prepare much better in their next EURO matches.

I can promise you that Australia will remember it until next time England offer to play us, and until they do, England will be reminded of it.
We've won the Rugby World Cup, Cricket World Cup, Ashes in Cricket, beat the british lions in Rugby and beat England in the Davis Cup tie, and everyone from england was saying that this was ebcause Englands national sport was soccer, and they'd show us that during this friendly...Well, whilst you had ur best taem out their it was 2-0. And to be honest, I dont think they would have scored if Kewell stayed out there, its just the influence he has on the game, and we would have been puting them under much omre pressure.

Now, its time for all those poms that before the friendly were saying they were going to cream us, to come out and say "its only a friendly", and all those other lame excuses that they're sure to use. Face it, before the match u were backing urself. You had a full strength team, so did we. You were at home, we thrashed you.

Cheers

I was very pleased of our Australian side today, more so than ever.

All the bad thoughts of Iran and Uruguay are all but gone now and to make me even more surprised my Dad (who is English through and through) was going for Australia! It'd be like Saddam rooting for the Yanks!

Kewell really showed that he really is World Class material. Viduka was laclustre, but he always seems to be when playing for Australia, he does alot and not seen and not heard. The whole side played well, not a bad one amongst them. Love that ball from Aloisi to set up Emerton, class.

As for the England disallowed goal, it wasn't offside, but that's what it wasn't pulled up for, it was a foul on the defender, commentators failed to pick that up.

Anyway the way that Erikkson changed the whole side even though being down 2 nil just showed that he has basically succumb to the clubs, it's a disgrace really. I thought there was no greater honour than representing your country.

Anyway it was still brilliant to see...bring it on next year. Australia vs England, Telstra Stadium.
