European Champion Greece Thread

Starting XI
In light of the european champions recent performances I decided to research their standings after three games during the Euro qualifiers.

Turns out that after three games in the European Qualifiers Greece was not in a much better position.

They 3 points in three games. Having had lost to Spain 2-0 and Ukraine 2-0. They won the third game against Armenia 2-0.

Right now in three games they have 2 points. So lets see if history repeats itself..

Kazakstan is next.

good point, Pontiakos

Greece's Road to Portugal

also in 2002 we LOST in Ukraine 2-0. This time we tied 1-1.

in 2002 we lost to Spain (2-0 in Athens), this time we lost to Albania (but IN Albania).

in 2002 we beat Armenia in Athens, this year we drew with Turkey (a much better opponent) at home.

So far we have played only one match at home. The Greek fans will be behind their team in a big way... We are nowhere near being out of this!

You're welcome. BTW, who says "The Ukraine" anyway? Nobody says "The Greece" or "The Canada". :D

But everybody that ive been around, except for Ukrainians, says "The Ukraine".
I think it's cause it was part of the USSR and it was referred to as "The Ukraine." Some people over here didn't get the memo.

It's the same reason why an alarming number of Americans think there's still a country called Czechoslovakia.

At the moment , all teams through away important points...

Greece= -3 (with Albania) , -2 (with Turkey in Athens)
Danemark= -2 with Turkey and -2 with Ucraine (both at home)
Turkey= -2 (with Georgia in Turkey)
Ucraine= -2 (with Greece at home)

So :

Ucraine = -2
Turkey = -2
Danemark = -4
Greece = -5

Hahaha, wow that is dumb. I guess on their maps there are countries called USSR, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, West Germany and East Germany. :p

The usual suspects have been called up by Rehangel for the game against Kazakstan.
The only new face is Kyriakos (Panathinaikos-LB) who replaces Dabizas on the squad.

I thought he replaced Goumas. Not that it matters, he'll be warming the bench no doubt.

Well neither Dabizas or Goumas are in the squad vs. Kazakhstan. I saw in a Reuters report that Kyriakos will be paired with Dellas in the middle.

But it must be wrong... I can't see him taking Kapsis' spot.
I wish Tavlaridis from Lille would have been named to the squad and either Amanatidis or Anastasiou... but I think Otto wants to keep the same group of players now that they've been together for over 2 years. You can't blame him for that.
We should beat Kazakhstan handily THREE or FOUR-NIL I say.

There are no excuses here its very simple either we win or our chances of going through will be nothing short of a miracle.

this team has pulled of miracles in the past but for once I would like to not fear a heart attack because I'm a Greek rooting for my national squad.

Well, a great VICTORY. 3-1 Greece.
Charisteas with 2 and Katsouranis with the other.
Also, this game marks Zagorakis' 100th cap. The most ever by a Greek.
Great game in a must win.

It's a step in the right direction... but lets be honest, we had no choice, it would be pure embarassment for us to not win this one.
